Goodbye Sunshine Festival @ some warehouse in Marrickville
15/03/2008

A handful issues stopped this from being as enjoyable as I hoped.

Firstly, while using Da Lil' Boyz Room I over aggressively did my fly up and ripped it from my jeans. I dug into my pocket and discovered for some reason I had a safety pin in there. I did my best makeshift handyman fix but for the rest of evening I was continually paranoid that all the cool kids were looking at my crotch and thinking 'does he know his fly is undone?'. I couldn't relax.

Secondly, sometime between Dead Farmers and Pets With Pets the PA started to die. The two sound guys (who were awesome looking sound guys with big beards and trucker hats) tried effortlessly between the next couple of bands to fix the issue but essentially everyone from there on in was playing an instrumental set.

I left early (around the time that The Laurels were just wrapping up their set) under the weight of the two problems above and the fact that I had decided that as much as I wanted to see Ghosts Of Television rip into their new stuff I was more keen to see it under better circumstances (ie. with vocals and not trying desperately to cover my groin region with my t-shirt). As I left and headed up the drive way out of the industrial space the Police were coming down. They already had one guy on the ground and their sniffer dog was hard at work trying to nab others.

Lucas, the organiser of the festival, has informed us, that nine people in total were arrested and that the cops basically shut down the festival around the time the Straight Arrows were due to start. He has promised us that they will have another mini-festival with performances from the 'second half' of the bands that were unable to play.

Hats off to what was a well organised event. There was a great turnout (a couple hundred by my estimate) and throughout the evening there was a lovely community feeling about. Everyone was there to enjoy the bands on offer and support local music. Kids danced, drunk longnecks and most importantly - didn't pose.

As far as the performances went, all of the bands I got to see - Circle Pit, Dead Farmers, Pets With Pets and Talons - put on solid sets. The highlight was Dead Farmers' rendition of their unfuckwitable track Violence. The mid-song count in does it for me every time.

From all reports Ghosts Of Television crushed it, took names and then crushed those names. We are extremely excited about their new EP which is due sometime in the next few months. We think it's going to mind-fucking-blowing-wow, to say the least.
