The Come Together Festival just got a little bit rad(er) with the news that four exceptional local bands have been added to the bill.
Witch Hats, Straight Arrows and Circle Pit have been included on the Sunday (emo-focused) line-up, playing on the Faster Louder stage, while Sydney ass-kickers Fait Accompli have been added to the (more impressive) Saturday line-up to play on The Filth stage.
Tickets for both days are still available via the festival website.

Even with the awesome two international acts (Shocking Pinks and Ratatat) the first line-up announcement for the Essential Festival didn't really get us all that giggly and excited.
The second (and final) list of artists has us moderately more 'whoooooo' over the whole thing.
Fuck it, even with all that awesome, the thought of the Gaelic sound will more than likely drive us to the My Disco show instead.
It should also be noted that these are the bands that will be at the Sydney leg of the festival. Although the core bands are the same, Melbourne has a slightly different 'second string' team. Check the festival website for that info.
Tickets are on sale NOW via Moshtix and will set you back around $55.

A festival which manages to pack every decent band in Sydney into one place on the same day? Yes, that would be delightful.
Well, this Saturday (TOMORROW!) it appears to be happening.
Last year this same festival was cancelled at the last minute. Apparently, it was because 'the fuzzzz' got word and closed in. This year it's all a little bit more secretive with the location details only given out on a person by person basis.
Line-up and playing times:
12:00 - Regular John
11:30 - Holy Soul
11:00 - Dead China Doll
10:30 - Straight Arrows
10:00 - Atrocities
09:30 - Ghosts of Television
09:00 - The Laurels
08:30 - Pets With Pets
08:00 - Talons
07:30 - The Process
07:00 - Kirin J. Calinan
06:30 - Dead Farmers
06:00 - Circle Pit
05:30 - Tired Hands

Occasionally, the stars align and we are treated to a show which showcases just how many special bands occupy this town. Saturday was one of those rare moments when a trio of very different - yet all equally impressive - bands were presented to us like a feast to a hungry teenage girl who is thinking about starting an eating disorder because of the pressure of Dolly magazine.
Straight Arrows kicked things off to a fairly empty main room. Their jangly garage punk is starting to sound slightly more refined, yet still packed full of the carefree approach which makes them such a pleasure to watch.

The best thing about Tuesday night wasn't the almost inch perfect set from the Atlanta new age punksters. Nor was it the entertaining way one of the singers was able to spit up into the air and catch it in his mouth. Even the Christmas carol encore, although highly entertaining, wasn't the highlight. The defining moment on the night was earlier on when, as hard hitting local band, Dead Farmers, closed their thirty minute feedback-driven set with the jaw-dropping track Violence, the small group of people in front of of me paused mid-conversation and completely focused their attention on the stage. It was more than likely the first time they had heard the Sydney trio and you could literally see their heads collectively explode as the powerful opening riff completely fucked them up.
As the track finished the bassist slopperly launched his guitar in the direction of a photographer in the front row. It was a beautiful sight. Dead Farmers had undoubtedly just earned themselves a whole bunch of new fans.
Straight Arrows were well recieved as expected. Their lo-fi garage sound was a perfect warm-up for the Black Lips, whose loyal fanbase was one of the most politely behaved crowds in recent memory. Not that the sold out crowd didn't get slightly wild during the main event as bottles were thrown, security guards had a constant expression of concern and a beautiful careless attitude filled the room.
Black Lips ripped through an endless stream of well executed jangly tunes - pulling mainly from their latest album Good Bad Not Evil. Although their set was a lot tamer than expected they still had a definite swagger that gave them a forceful stage presence. It wasn't the best show of the year but there was a still an undeniable feeling of satisfaction in the air as the sweaty crowd converged up the stairs and out onto Oxford Street. People had arrived with high expectations and from where I was standing it was clear that the fury of well orchestrated noise did more than enough to meet them.

It was one of those dream line-ups on Friday evening as the fantastic Melbournitez Spider Vomit dropped into town and were lovingly supported by two of Sydney's finest.
Things kicked off with Talons ripping through an impressive set. Our favourite Sydney band blah blah blah.

They were even nice enough to dedicate a song to us. Possibly to ensure they were going to get some sort of favorable mention here. We aren't that cheap are we? We are? Ok.

It wasn't really surprising considering the crazy amount of stuff on last Friday that this show didn't get a massive turnout. That said, it was a bit disappointing considering the bucketload of very delightful local and INTERNATIONAL bands performing.
We got to the Annandale Hotel super early. So early that we - or the cool half of us at least - were asked several times which band we were part of. So, the reason for the our early attendance? No it wasn't for the lovely overpriced beer in plastic glasses.. it was to see Dead Farmers..

Sometimes I don't like you Sydney. But not today, or more accurately - tonight, I love you because you are serving up a smorgasboard of awesome musical shows all around the place...
Actor/Model launch their new EP tonight at World Bar with a little help from We Stole The Organ and Sailmaker.
The Stabs are playing at the Lansdowne and it's FREE and supported by Talons and Holy Soul...

Indie comedic-rockers Bluejuice are having their single launch tonight at Candy's Apartment. They will be supported by one of our faves - Hand Me My Jetpack.

Exciting news in our world today.
No, it's not a new Spoon song that will 'Blow' your 'mind' or a reforming of Fugazi that will set 'the' world 'on' fire.
This shit is real, and it is happening right now in front of your eyes. As of today in conjunction with all your favourite local independant bands, and all the ones you've never heard of yet we are starting to sell EPs, Albums, Records, T-Shirts, Trucker Caps and personalised Frisbees that are produced by the very artists that make the Australian music scene churn along at the frenetic pace that it does.
While I may be a little over excited about the lengths we are going to, we do truly believe that the sky is the limit. And while we are starting off small with our initial catalogue (I'll get to that in a minute) we are truly excited about selling all sorts of items on behalf of some of Australia's best musical talent.

Yes, we know we talk about the Straight Arrows a lot.
But it"s only because we are a fan of the radness which they seem to eminate when they are on stage.
Another great example of which happened last night as they battled through the pole dancers and gay porn at the Newtown Hotel (No, I'm not just falling into stereotypes here, they really were playing gay porn movies on the TV's around the bar) to once again entertain the punters and get everyone into a party mood as party of the monthly Hit The Switch night.

It's hard to believe but it's been almost a whole month since we last mentioned The Straight Arrows. Well, they went down to Melbourne to play a few shows and pressed their debut release, a 7-inch single of Can't Count / Something Happens. The record will be put out via a newly established Sydney label Juvenile Records, which is committed to only puting out 7-inch records and was founded, in part, by Straight Arrows frontman, Owen.
If your in Sydney towne tonight then you can head over to Hit The Switch above Newtown Hotel for the launch of single. I went to an (almost) identical show last month (because it's a monthly thing) and it was awesome. They have created a nice, relaxed, house-party-like vibe without any pretentiousness or wanker-ness. So rare these days in this city.
If you've already got plans tonight, that is, you really want to see The Basics at Candy's for some reason then don't fret as you can catch The Straight Arrows again tomorrow at 3pm playing an in-store at Paint It Black on Enmore Road. If you have ever been to the shop you know it's about the size of a burley party animal and, word has it, the band will take up the entire store, with the onlookers taking over the footpath. Should be THE radness.

Ok, quickly!!! With lack of photos this will have to be short - because everyone knows how much you prefer 'imagery'...
It all started with Youth Group's show at The Factory. I think there are three types of people in the town of Sydney - those that only know Youth Group because of 'Forever Young', those that have watched them from 7km away at a festival and 'somehow' not felt engaged and those that have seen them play impressive live shows in a whole variety of large and small venues. Now being somewhat veterans of the Sydney live scene, their show is a well oiled machine of delicately crafted and well thoughtout songs. I, unfortunately, got there too late and missed Belles Will Ring, but from all reports, a few drunkens, they were amazing. Youth Group held the audience in the palm of their hands for the entire duration of the show. Pretty much guraranteed enjoyment.
I have always wondered how a town like Newtown can continually produce a large number of high quality bands (or at least be their place of residence) and still not have a consistently good live venue. On Saturday I was fortunate enough to uncover a bit of hidden gem. The function room above the Newtown Hotel is a fantastic little space, complete with air hockey tables, pinball machines and girls in cages. The night was put on my the people of Hit The Switch and it was great to amongst a non-pretentious, almost house party like environment with people dancing around to dj's as they spun old swing records and the occasional modern day indie anthem.
I was mainly there to see The Straight Arrows perform (I jibbered a lot about them last week.. and yeah I don't care if they are a bit of an inside joke .. I can't get enough) and the setup was perfect for their trashy rock style, positioned inside a small room, nestled between pinball machines. They put on another fantastic performance, full of friendly crowd banter and noise. The crowd was a friendly bunch, with, as mentioned, very few of the look-at-me types that you get in the city 'indie clubs'. People were there to have a good time and didn't care how they looked and what people thought, great to see in a city which is often lost in it's own thoughts of self importance. I really hope the venue starts to put on more events like this (that said, the Hit The Switch thing is going to happen at the end of every month - more info at their MySpace page). The Straight Arrows also hinted that they would be played there again next month, hopefully that becomes a regular thing as well.

We battled through this thing called 'bad weather' last night and went out to see The Straight Arrows at the Abercrombie Hotel. All week I have been exciting about seeing these guys on Saturday, but then when this last minute show came up (with an awesome support line-up to boot) it was all just too tempting.
They are a breathe of fresh air in an overly predictable and copycat 'scene' that I find myself increasingly becoming frustrated and bored by. Maybe it's the fact the whole thing is a bit of a side project that's gaining momentum, or just the sloppy style of their sound, but The Straight Arrows put forward a care-free attitude and, for lack of a better word at hand, wildness that I haven't seen in some time.
Unfortunately, I didn't arrive in time to see the whole bunch of fantastic support bands, including Papa vs Pretty, Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers and Danger Of Death (famous for being 'that band with the song about vomiting on your city'). I did see some final moments of Richard In Your Mind and they were as entertaining as always.

Just quickly.. moments before the blissness of mid-week day off-ness comes into play..
.. the Essential Festival is on tomorrow and for those looking for playing times for the bands.. well HERE YOU GO. Luckily, the action is all indoors so this shitty (except if your a farmer) weather that has been killing the productivity of Sydney over the past couple of days won't be a factor.
And.. see you all at The Straight Arrows show tonight.. right?

Anzac Day is perfectly planted in the middle of this week to nicely break everything up and create another weekend out of nothing this Tuesday night.. and there are more than a few things going on. The Basics finish up the Sydney part of their month long tri-state residency at the Hopetoun Hotel, supported lovingly by Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers. That is a tempting offer - BUT at the Abercrombie Hotel there is a whole lot more action with The Straight Arrows, Cuthbert again (doubling up ..) and Richard In Your Mind and Papa Vs Pretty. Holy shittt that is crazy nice.
On Wednesday the Essential Festival is on at Surry Hills and, with some sort of dream line-up is very hard to ignore for any music loving guppy. At this point you might as well start drifting into the weekend - and there is no better way to do it than with the help of the lovely Sandwich Club kids and their end of the month show at Candy's Apartment.
Oh my.. it's not even the weekend yet.. and as you can see Friday night is crazy hectic as well with shows by My Disco, Youth Group and Midnight Juggernauts at different spots all over town - satisfying whatever your taste may be. If (and that's a fairly large IF) there is still juice in the tank by Saturday evening then it's going to be pretty hard to go past the Straight Arrows show at Newtown Hotel. I am dying to see this band in action and this seems like the perfect, strange, small venue where I want to see them (although Tuesday night at Abercrombie seems too good to be true)... Whoa.. better sleep up tonight kiddles, this could be a pretty darn bizzy week.
