Last year when we went to the Essential Festival it was a little underwhelming. In fact, the free Slate 'n coke that we were given at one stage from a promo girl that looked a little bit like a cheap hooker was the highlight of the day. And I don't really like bourbon. Or cheap hookers.
It's hard to put a finger on the reason for the high amount of suck-ness. The line-up wasn't shit. In fact any festival that has Shocking Pinks, Talons, Richard In Your Mind, Straight Arrows and Ratatat on the same bill should be enough for at least a triple orgasm (maybe a quadruple). And even though I haven't had the best experiences at the Gaelic Theatre in regards to the general sound it's hardly enough to spoil a day of well delivered live music.
Throughout the afternoon I 'hung out' (and also 'chilled') with a bunch of people who, like me, had received free tickets. I wouldn't have bought a ticket. Fifty dollars seems a bit rich for a bunch of local and TWO international acts (for the record New Zealand isn't really 'international'), especially considering I can see the three or four decent local acts on the same bill for $10 on a lucky night in the BIG city.
Side note: despite all reports that tickets sales hadn't got very well, they were still trying to sell them on the door for $55!
Anyways.. I got there at midday (when the doors opened) to catch thee beloved Talons do their thing.

Saturday night concreted the FACT that Die! Die! Die! are almost certainly the most entertaining live act in the universe. Their stage presence, crowd interaction and general punk ruckusness is unrivaled by any band from the past, present or future.
The night was kicked off by The Ripping Dylans who played an entertaining half-hour set. They were a little bit sloppier than normal but their general style and the way in which they present themselves supports this. The Fait Accompli kids down the front did I lovely job trying to get the early bird crowd into the Dylans' set. Unfortunately, however, the large-ish venue didn't help the band out and for the most part they seemed to just be trying to fight their way through their allocated slot.
By the time Talons took to the stage for the middle portion of the night, the crowd had grown to an impressive size AND I had successfully become mildly shitfaced. Their set was the usual fury of beautiful punk noise. Sadly, however, the lack of songs dedicated to my facial hair limits their mention in this review.
And then came the main event...

As I made the walk up the stairs into Spectrum I was welcomed by local outfit, Circle Pit, unleashing a skillfully directed fury of noise. They uniquely mix together lo-fi punk with a much larger, forceful sound. The five members throw hard left and right combinations of drums and guitars with just a sprinkle of keyboard and almost unrecognisable vocals.
They kinda sound like the type of band that would live in your garage and pay their rent with a once-a-week performance where they show off a new song that is like cock-rocking hair metal that has been stripped back, beaten down and then screamed over the top of. Wait, did that make any sense?
Their line-up combines two of the peeps from one of our favourite local acts, Straight Arrows, a fiery-looking mini Axl Rose frontman, a slightly older gentleman and a wild keyboardist who is permanently slamming away with some sort of vocoder device in this mouth. At times it's hard to know where to look, with every corner of the stage containing something interesting.
Their music is hard to pin down but it's a thoroughly enjoyable ram shackling chaotic wall of sound, that's for damn sure.

Even with the awesome two international acts (Shocking Pinks and Ratatat) the first line-up announcement for the Essential Festival didn't really get us all that giggly and excited.
The second (and final) list of artists has us moderately more 'whoooooo' over the whole thing.
Fuck it, even with all that awesome, the thought of the Gaelic sound will more than likely drive us to the My Disco show instead.
It should also be noted that these are the bands that will be at the Sydney leg of the festival. Although the core bands are the same, Melbourne has a slightly different 'second string' team. Check the festival website for that info.
Tickets are on sale NOW via Moshtix and will set you back around $55.

A handful issues stopped this from being as enjoyable as I hoped.
Firstly, while using Da Lil' Boyz Room I over aggressively did my fly up and ripped it from my jeans. I dug into my pocket and discovered for some reason I had a safety pin in there. I did my best makeshift handyman fix but for the rest of evening I was continually paranoid that all the cool kids were looking at my crotch and thinking 'does he know his fly is undone?'. I couldn't relax.
Secondly, sometime between Dead Farmers and Pets With Pets the PA started to die. The two sound guys (who were awesome looking sound guys with big beards and trucker hats) tried effortlessly between the next couple of bands to fix the issue but essentially everyone from there on in was playing an instrumental set.
I left early (around the time that The Laurels were just wrapping up their set) under the weight of the two problems above and the fact that I had decided that as much as I wanted to see Ghosts Of Television rip into their new stuff I was more keen to see it under better circumstances (ie. with vocals and not trying desperately to cover my groin region with my t-shirt). As I left and headed up the drive way out of the industrial space the Police were coming down. They already had one guy on the ground and their sniffer dog was hard at work trying to nab others.
Lucas, the organiser of the festival, has informed us, that nine people in total were arrested and that the cops basically shut down the festival around the time the Straight Arrows were due to start. He has promised us that they will have another mini-festival with performances from the 'second half' of the bands that were unable to play.

A festival which manages to pack every decent band in Sydney into one place on the same day? Yes, that would be delightful.
Well, this Saturday (TOMORROW!) it appears to be happening.
Last year this same festival was cancelled at the last minute. Apparently, it was because 'the fuzzzz' got word and closed in. This year it's all a little bit more secretive with the location details only given out on a person by person basis.
Line-up and playing times:
12:00 - Regular John
11:30 - Holy Soul
11:00 - Dead China Doll

There are several reasons why this show fucking rocked and brought a smile to my face every time I thought about it for the next few days.
This was a PROPER album launch. Further played all of the tracks from their rideeeekolously good new album - in order. For people like me who have listened to the album around 1400 times over the past few weeks this was perfect. After playing the closing number, Karkana Kamuna Kaay, the band returned to the stage to play around five more older songs for the die hard front row fans (ie. Ben and Christian from Talons).
The venue was about 90% full with about 98% of those people there to enjoy the band - not just fuckers on the way home from a drunken night out with the urge to see a 'pub band' perform. Thank you Mardi Gras for trapping all those folks within the city limits.
Talons opened, dedicated a song to the DJ 'crew' that I am part of and seemed truly humbled by the fact they were supporting 'the band which made them want to form a band'. They also rocked. Fucking pythons down the pants kind of furious rocking. About 11% finer than their set the night before in support of the Batriding kids.
Sounds Like Sunset, although not my kettle of deep fried fish and/or chips, did what they do really well. They also had a Dad playing guitar, which only adds to their slacker we-don't-give-a-shit attitude that seems to nicely compliment their musical style.

Our lurve and/or lust for Batrider is nothing that we have ever hidden in the confines of this web alleyway. We thought their debut album was a brilliant mix of every element that made them exciting the first time we saw them and from a live performance perspective they have rarely ever put a foot wrong. In recent times it is obvious, although their sound has stayed as relentless as ever, their method of attack has somewhat shifted. Their relocation to Europia is the kind of career move that makes or breaks bands but the foursome seem have taken the plunge into the wider, deeper and more dangerous waters with a great sense of determination and with the clear intention of carving out a career doing what we think they are soooo damn good at.
On Friday night, much like the majority of their most recent performances on 'home' soil, saw them once again serve up an endless stream of new content. They seem set on moving forward at a blistering speed and, although from a personal point of view I was more in the mood for a bunch of 'familar' songs, it's hard to knock that kind of approach.
Plagued by a series of technical set backs the band ploughed through their set and, even though their performance didn't orgasm my senses like on previous occasions, it was delivered with the usual perfect balance of emotion and brute force. There was zero fake buildup for the grande finale 'radio song' and very little self congratulatory bullshit. It was just the kind of relentless, determined music that we expected when we walked through the doors and that we continually lust for at every show we attend.
The band is now off to RADelaide to record a new album, working in the same environment in which they recorded the Pink Guitars Yellow Stars acoustic EP. After this they will heading back to Europeland to play even more shows and - more than likely - tear some folks a new one.

We don't normally cover the goings on of Melbourne (cuz we don't live there) but there are a couple of awesome Sydney bands heading down this weekend which if you live in the Southern city we think you should check out.

Talons are also doing at instore today at 5pm at Missing Link. The lovely poster below also highlights the fact that we probably should have told you this all yesterday so you might have had a chance to go and see them play with TV For Cats (more on them soon) and Group Seizure.

.. and if you can't get to see Ghosts Of Television tonight you can catch them (along with a whole bunch of other awesome bands) at the St Kilda Festival on Sunday...

Firstly, it should be noted that those guys that have that song about 'amphibians' - Children Collide - actually headlined this show. We didn't stick around for them. We heard the opening couple of lines and decided that they still haven't learnt to create songs with decent lyrics and headed for the exit. This review won't mention them in the same way it won't make any mention of Hasselhoff's part in the falling of the Berlin Wall and the role that the political party in charge of the country plays in determining the cost of groceries, petrol and sexual 'devices'.
I arrived in time to catch the second half of Sacred Stereos' set. Their music was a little on the bland side, deciding it best to rehash a dozen or so proven formulas rather than create any distinguishable personality to their sound.
Regular John played roughly 80% louder than any other band on the night or in the history of music. So loud in fact that the line for ear plugs after their opening number was longer than the line for the over-priced beer in plastic glasses.
Their set was enjoyable, they showcased a never-ending array of songs that blended hair metal attitude with cock-rocking power chords. They were entertaining but didn't unleash anything that would make me rush out to see them headline a show in a hurry. Their latest single, Devil's Remedy, was the highlight as the clever blending of the catchier chorus with their believable attitude making it come alive a lot more than their other songs.
Side note: you can listen to their latest single on Episode 42 of our podcast.

So, Australia Day is upon us - the national holiday where it is actually against the law NOT to get shitfaced and barbeque some livestock. With the Big Day Out in town and the Sydney Festival still going there is definately no shortage of things going on.
Believe it or not there are still tickets available for LCD Soundsystem's show at Enmore Theatre tomorrow night. We hear you still might be able to snap up front dance floor spots if yo act quick like as well.
If you have over-spent during this crazy month of January and are looking for the cheaper option then the Annandale Hotel might be just what you need. They are having a listening party for the Hottest 100, as well as $10 jugs, $10 all-yo-can-eat wings and ping pong. But that's hardly even the best part as, once the countdown wraps up and hopefully Silverchair haven't taken out the top spot, there is the 'afterparty' featuring an incredibly solid line-up.
It will set you back a measly $10 and is a solid three plus hours of awesomeness:
7.00pm - Tokyo Blonde
7.30pm - The Detours
8.00pm - The Ripping Dylans
8.30pm - Bird Automatic
9.10pm - Talons

When the time came to put together our annual list of favourite albums of the past twelve months the task seemed a whole lot easier than last year. With the help of our rating system we were able to shortlist the albums from 2007 that we really enjoyed.

Batrider - Tara
Brutal, stripped back, dirty bath water music. You can keep your polished tiresome songs and we will keep worshiping every action of this delightful New Zealand four piece.

Talons really need to stop doing such impressive things like releasing an unbelievably good EP and ripping apart shows like they did last Friday night. Everytime they do anything we feel compelled to tell you all about it. These accomplishments are now stacked dizzyingly high and every other day I find myself typing the word 'Talons' and then raving on like a muppet.
With all that said - last Friday, in celebration of the release of their EP, was probably the most intense, tightest and around most solid performance I have ever seen them put in. Ever.
It was the first time in a while I had seen the Hopetoun truly packed out and the band seem to thrive on the back of the responsive crowd as they shredded through all of the tracks off Ducats and a few others in a longer than normal performance. From where I stood the audience appeared well and truly in their grip.
It caps off an impressive year for the Sydney trio who we have seen develop into an incredibly infectious band over the past twelve months. Let's all hope that 2008 sees the band put out a full length release.

After giving ourselves a mild reacharound the other day in regards to the fact that two of our favourite bands had reached the final we were quietly confident that one of them was going to be playing at Homebake this year.
Talons destroyed through their set, The Ripping Dylans were solidly entertaining and Hand Me My Jetpack finished will possibly the best performance by them that I have had the chance to see. After the show it was pretty much cemented in our heads that Homebake was suddenly starting to look a whole load better. We started drafting the letters to all our friends who were going to the festival telling them to make sure they got in early to check out an awesome band.
But alas.. it turns out the only band on the night that wasn't a thrill to watch won the competition.
Congrats to Bridge Mary Kiss, 17-year old kids who seem to have a strong following and from all reports are nice lads. It all could have turned out so much better though.

It was one of those dream line-ups on Friday evening as the fantastic Melbournitez Spider Vomit dropped into town and were lovingly supported by two of Sydney's finest.
Things kicked off with Talons ripping through an impressive set. Our favourite Sydney band blah blah blah.

There was a lot of things goingz on in Sydney Towne last Saturday evening but for us there was only one thing worth our precious 'weekend time'.
Our second annual party was held above the Newtown Hotel and carried on from last year's highly successful rooftop event, which featured a then up-and-coming band called Walrus and the now defunct Russian Brides.
This year we were lucky enough to get the TWO BEST BANDS IN SYDNEY at the moment - Hand Me My Jetpack and Talons - to play.
We honestly couldn't have dreamt up a better line-up and the whole set-up of them playing on the floor in a party-like setup was awesome. Big thanks to everyone that came along to celebrate and super shout-outs to both of the bands for playing. Judging by the positive reaction from people I talked to after both performances I think you definately got yourselves some new fans.
There are memory holes in my brain that you could drive semi-trailers through but allow these photos to pass on some of the atmosphere...

We are only now putting ourselves back together from what turned out to be a pretty hectic weekend. With our party on Saturday night and the final organisational steps for making one of the key member of our 'staff' transform into 'an international correspondent' it was obviously a little bit insane-like.
It all starting on Friday night with Walrus' single launch at the Annandale Hotel...

The Ripping Dylans opened the night and were incredibly awesome. Treating the early-birds to a performance that was a lovely balance of controlled noise and rock 'n' roll attitude.

So, this saturday, there is heaps of stuff going on, but the only gig worth being at is this one:

We have organised it all, bribed the bands, and still managed to keep it FREE (although we might ask for a small donation on the night).
We think it will be a great night. Think debaucherous house party, rowdy bands rocking out on the floor, and a copious supply of drinks at the bar.
Please come along, bring your friends and help us have a really good time.

You know those hairy Sydney guys that play bluesy, foot tappy good times rock?

You know, Walrus.
Yeah, well they are about to put out a DOUBLE A side titled Funky Monkey/Marilyn Monroe (but not on vinyl... how does that work?), and to celebrate are playing a launching show at the Annandale Hotel on the 12th October. Whats more The Ripping Dylans and Talons are there in support. A tasty bonus as if you even needed one.
Usually this would go straight to the gig section, but we thought the fact that they had an amusing new promo photo AND that the bass player bribed me with a case of beer last week warranted a showing here in the news.

It's hard to believe, but it's true. Talons performed their first headline show EVER on Sunday night and confirmed our sneaking suspicion that they are indeed 'fucking rad'.

Are you broke from a busy Saturday night? Did you get robbed at 3am coming home from the pub? Well, not all hope is lost. There are three different things going on tomorrow around town that are FREE to get into.
Kicking off around midday is the annual Marrickville Road Festival which features live performances from The Seabellies, Unkle Ho, The Dardanelles and Belles Will Ring. We wish we could tell you their playing times but the information document on this page seems to have taken the weekend off. It's a great festival with lovely food, awesome bands and is nice enough (because it's Marrickville) to let people drink longnecks in the street.
One of our fave Sydney bands, Talons kick off their month long September residency at the Hopetoun Hotel tomorrow from 6pm. They will supported by Emergency Emergency and the highly entertaining Laura Imbruglia.
For those that live on the eastern side of town (and people do!) then don't worry you haven't been left out of this poor man's wet dream. Beach Road Hotel at Bondi will play be hosting it's normal weekly Sunday afternoon FREE entertainment with performances by Lost Valentinos, Yves Klein Blue and Mission Control. The Hopetoun Hotel MySpace doesn't have them listed as playing on the first Sunday of the month (the 2nd) so maybe you will have to hang out til the 9th for the first show.
Keeping in line with previous Sunday residencies we would bet on the shows starting a little earlier than normal (prob about 6pm) and also being FREE! These details - as well as who the supports will be for each show - to be confirmed as news comes in.
If you can't wait until next month you can catch Talons in two shows next week - supporting Ghosts Of Television on the Wednesday at Flinders Hotel in Darlinghurst as well as on the Friday at the Landsdowne Hotel with The Stabs and Holy Soul.

What is it with long weekends that prompts venues to put on special events and kick out such awesome shows?
Tonight, there is a joint album launch for Kes and Sly Hats at the Hopetoun Hotel. With awesome supports in the form of Rand & Holland and The Garbage And The Flowers this is very much the pick of the night, especially if you enjoy your music melodic and 'soundscapy'. You can get in for $10 as well, which is only slightly more expensive than 'free'.
Tomorrow night (Sunday, for those that have lost me already) there are two awesome (mini) festivals going on. The South By Inner West Festival at Annandale Hotel may have an incredibly cheeeeeesy name, but it does also have a barrage of awesome bands playing - seven, in fact - all for the measly price of 20 shucks. The line-up includes The Panda Band, Cut Off Your Hands, Bright Yellow, Moscow Schoolboy and some other equally great bands.
If you get to the door at the Annandale Hotel and it's either sold out or you are $4 short of the entry fee, you can hitch-hike yourself over to Spectrum for the Upside Down Festival. You will be treated to a whole load of great bands, including Spod, Whitley, The Seabellies, Richard In Your Mind and a bucketload more.
If you're SUPER cheap and/or all your bills are due and/or you have been badly robbed DO NOT WORRY - there is still something for you. Over at the Hopetoun Hotel legendary indie rockers, Peabody, are showcasing their new line-up and songs. They will headline what is surely the greatest ever mish-mashed line-up of all time as they will be supported by one of our faved bands of Sydney Talons, as well as those delicious kids from Canberra, Soft Tigers. How much will this barrage of awesome set you back I hear you ask? You guessed it - ZERO dollars.

Tomorrow the My Sydney Riot Festival is on at East Village, Darlinghurst. Besides the impressive array of artists on the bill (Talons, Fait Accompli, Bird Automatic, Soft Tigers, Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers) the folks behind this have a great reputation of finding some awesome unknown bands. On several occasions they have introduced me to several acts that have gone almost immediately onto my 'awesome list' so there is a little bit of a guarantee that you will discover your new favourite band at this event.
It seems there are still tickets available and I imagine it would be fair bet to take 'see who you wake up tomorrow' approach and buy some on the door as well.. but no guarantees there.
The whole thing kicks off at midday and all the info, playing times etc that you need can be found HERE.

It was suggested that I start this post off something like this: 'Friday appears to be an orgy of talented musicians converged to spread their love juices and music over the town of Sydney'. Instead however, I am designating the following as the start of this post: 'There is a 'fuck load' of shiz-nit going on in Olde Sydneye Towne tonight'.

And while it's true that Fletch is being released in digitally remastered format, which is as we all know 7 times better than analogue, the most important piece of information is as follows. Some bands by the name of Wolf and Cub + Snowman, Dukes Of Windsor + The Paper Scissors + Bird Automatic, Knife Machine + teenagersintokyo + Yellowbird + Die Monde + Diamond Daggers + Papa Vs Pretty, Poly & The Statics + The Seabellies + Pang and Fait Accompli + Talons + Porch Light Fiasco (affectionately known as 'The Fuckload') have officially come together as part of what is probably the biggest night ever in Sydney in terms of choices between ass kicking bands/artists/ensembles/gangstas that will blow your musical mind.
However, while you may think that this news is sent directly from Allah himself, and that all your secret prayers have been answered, I sadly must admit that it is also my duty to inform you of some slightly more upsetting news. I don't mean to bring you down, just to ensure that you remain on a nice plateau. Not such a downer though, when you compare it with the fantastic news the JTV will be airing a Go-Betweens special tomorrow night, so don't forget to McLennanise your self of your sins and indulge in some brilliance.

Oh, how it all gets soooo very crazy busy. Tonight (Wednesday) wild-pop-darling Har Mar Superstar is playing a dj set at 34B (next to Spectrum on Oxford St) and is rumored to be supported by dj sets from Fabrizio Moretti (of The Strokes) and Tony Bevilacqua (The Distillers). Hear what the cooler kids are listening to. It will cost you $15 to get in and the doors open at 9pm.
If dj's aren't really your thing, you can pop next door to Spectrum and see Talons. As we have said before they are incredibly good - and, although I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the two support bands (The Dirty Arrows and The Scream) before, Talons alone make this worth the $10 entry fee. Note: it was reported earlier that Tokyo Blonde would be headlining this show, it seems they have been mysteriously moved off the bill and now Talons are the main event.
Sydney lads, Dappled Cities Fly are planning a world-wide takeover. Step one of this is getting their video for Fire Fire Fire played on mtvU. You can help them achieve this and beat some other (pretty ordinary) acts by going HERE and voting until your ass falls off.
This week we have been busy setting up a Virb page for Polaroids of Androids. What is Virb you say? It's like MySpace without all the insane ugliness and bugs. We are still ironing out all the little creases etc on our page and prettying it right up, but sign up and become our friend. It's one of those 'never regretting that' kind of things.

I am not 18 anymore and super late nights when I get home as dawn is cracking is well and truly behind me. This said, as I have confessed countless numbers of times in the walls of this literary playground, if Die! Die! Die! are playing within a 50km radius of my home then I am liable to do things that I would normally pass over as stupid and/or file under "not a great idea".

So, last night, we got dropped off at about 11pm at the entrance to Oxford St, amongst bucks parties, drunken fools and shady characters, to attend Spectrum"s new super late once-a-month event, My Sydney Riot.
The crowd was a mixture of people left over from the Kat Frankie show, drunken dickheads who had discovered that Spectrum was going to be open super late and a few hardcore, dedicated people who like staying up late and get their brains exploded.
Talons took the stage first, at about midnight, and were probably one of the best unfamilar bands I have seen in a long while. They matched talent (speed drumming like speed metal band drummer!!!) with a touch of charisma and just a dash of 'well-dressed-ness'. They made me a fan, enough to maybe trek out to Annandale Hotel this Wednesday to see them play again (for FREE..).
