Last year the Come Together Festival went all a little bit emo and fell off our radar. This year it appears to have returned to it's roots and features a tonne of local 'indie' bands that have been pre-approved by Triple J.
No real surprises in the line-up, but the possibility of Thrills sideshows is moderately exciting.
Saturday
Faker, VHS or Beta, The Thrills, British India, Dappled Cities Fly, Cut Off Your Hands, Young & Restless, Sparkadia, Little Red, The Dirty Secrets, The Seabellies, I Heart Hiroshima, The Holidays, The Galvatrons, The John Steel Singers, Former Child Stars, Lions At Your Door, The Jezabel, The Vignettes.
Sunday
The Living End, Gyroscope, Birds Of Tokyo, The Hot Lies, Mammal, Dead Letter Circus, The Getaway Plan, Children Collide, Trial Kennedy, Many Machines On 9, Calling All Cars, Skybombers, In Fiction, Stealing O'Neal, Number Station, Acid Eyeliner, Short Stack, Irksome Bliss, Paper Champion.
The festival will once again take place within the confines of Sydney's Luna Park, this year on the 7th and 8th of June. The festival is also ALL AGES so watch out if you are one of those folks that doesn't really like 16-year-olds who think they are the kings of Cool Town.

It is extremely hard to sum up into logical sentences just how friggin' amazing this show was. How it immediately deleted last week's wondrous Arcade Fire performance from my memory and just how well James Murphy and his band transformed the already terrific music of LCD Soundsystem into something so much larger and awe inspiring.

Local lads Dappled Cities Fly opened the scheduled evening of entertainment up like a eager beaver would open a clam. They started to an almost empty room. They ended playing to room about 60% full. The time in between was spent playing some songs. Most of these songs were from their last album Granddance except for an older one (Cream) and a new one which sounded fairly awesome.

The other day it was revealed that Sparkadia had pulled out of their support slot as part of Dappled City Fly's February national tour and our excitement dipped just a notch.
Well, forget them, they are OLD news now.. water under the bridge.. as it has been revealed that Sydney hip-hop lunaticz Bluejuice will be taking their place.
So, that's The Seabellies, Bluejuice and Dappled Cities Fly. A lovely, diverse local line-up - you can't ask for much more than that.
Those dates again:
Wednesday, February 13: Oxford Arts Factory, Sydney
Thursday, February 14: Oxford Arts Factory, Sydney
Friday, February 15: East Brunswick Club, Melbourne
Saturday, February 16: The Zoo, Brisbane
Friday, February 22: Adelaide Fringe Festival

The Dappled tour is now a little bit lighter with this bit of sad news from up-and-comers Sparkadia floating into our inbox today...
Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to pull out of the February east coast tour with Dappled Cities.
We really really apologise to all who wanted to attend, and hope you can forgive us. We will definitely be back in March for shows all over Australia.
AB, Dave, Rabone & Tiffany.
We have subsequently downgraded the tour from 'very tasty' to just 'tasty'.

Back from the US of A with some new songs to show off.
Wednesday, February 13: Oxford Arts Factory, Sydney
Thursday, February 14: Oxford Arts Factory, Sydney
Friday, February 15: East Brunswick Club, Melbourne
Saturday, February 16: The Zoo, Brisbane
Friday, February 22: Adelaide Fringe Festival
The Dappled boys will be joined by Sparkadia and The Seabellies on all of the shows except for their Adelaide Fringe Festival appearance.
They will also be playing the Sydney and Melbourne Big Day Out Festivals as well as the support slots for the LCD Soundsystem sideshows in both cities so there are plenty of chances to hear the new material.
Tickets for the Sydney shows are on sale now via Moshtix and will set you back around $15 plus booking fee.

2007 is [almost] over and we are just about ready to get stuck into the crazy barrage of January shows that lay ahead of us like a keen and willing lady.
Previously:
But just like a donkey that loves to get beaten - we aren't finished. Drunk for New Years already you say? No. Just a little bit excited to summarize a few more things from the past twelve months.

The hot word traveling around the internetz at the moment (big ups to Sean via our forum for the hot tip) is that LCD Soundsystem will be playing two sideshows in Sydney and Melbourne when James Murphy and company are here for the Big Day Out.
Dates!
Saturday, January 26: Enmore Theatre, Sydney
Thursday, January 31: The Forum, Melbourne
No word yet on when tickets will be on sale and [obvs] this means they won't be doing the rumoured sideshow tour with Arcade Fire - who, incidentally, still haven't released the details of their sideshows as yet.
To add some extra sugar to the news apparently Sydney's own Dappled Cities Fly will be supporting - at least for the Enmore Theatre show. Great stuff.

A while back we reported that the Purple Sneakers kids had organised a fairly nice New Years bash at Sydney Uni - which was doubling as the unofficial Dappled Cities Fly welcome home party also. Well, today the line-up was completed with local acts Faker (co-headlining the night with the Dappled fellas), Sparkadia (recently signing with Ivy League Records), Cloud Control and Brag comp winners Where's Jerome all joining the bill.
These new acts will be joinning the current line-up which includes Young and Restless, The Tongue, The Holidays, Wons Phreely and S.Y.L.K.
Tickets are on sale now and although we orignally thought the $30ish price tag was a little steep we are now feeling that the wall-to-wall action doesn't get much better than this. Tickets available Moshtix, Ticketek and Sydney Uni Access Office.

Way back in June Dappled Cities Fly and Red Riders ended the shows on their double headline tour with a cover version of the Guns N Roses track. It went down extremely well with 'the people' and their record labels decided to put it out on vinyl.
Well, after about three months of waiting and occasionally emailing people who might things our copy of the 7" vinyl was delivered.
And it sounds as good as you thought it would..
And before you ask - no there wasn't a cover of Welcome To The Jungle on the b-side. There was nothing but white noise. I think the inclusion of maybe Red Riders covering Cream or Dappled doing their own version of Slide In Next To Me would have been appreciated.

It's normally around this time every year that venues, party people and everyone in-between start promoting their slightly overpriced 'party' nights for New Years Eve. Everyone with 4% of a chimp's brain knows that the last day of the year is just like every night of the year - but more crowded, more expensive and more disappointing.
Purple Sneakers are pouting on their end of year fiesta at Manning Bar at Sydney Uni. The night will feature Dappled Cities Fly (in their first show back in Sydney), Young and Restless, The Tongue, The Holidays, Wons Phreely, S.Y.L.K. and two super-special mystery bands selected by FBi and The Brag.
It does all very tasty and/or lovely BUT tickets are $30-35 (depending on expiry date of your fake student card) plus booking fee. To be honest we think it's just a little bit too high for our liking.
Tickets are on sale from Wednesday the 31st of October via Moshtix, Ticketek and Sydney Uni Access Office.

Continuing on from the success of their tribute to Ok Computer a few months back, Stereogum has put together a compilation album of various indie artists covering songs from REM's Automatic For The People.
That in itself is hardly 'news' or 'wow-like' BUT the fact that our very own Dappled Cities Fly feature on the album - alongside the likes of Figurines, Blitzen Trapper, Shout Out Louds and The Wrens - elevates it to warranting taking up this little piece of 'webspace'.
Their contribution is a cover of Try Not To Breathe and is available to download - with all of the other tracks on the album from HERE.
The Dappled kids are currently halfway through their New York stay and are just about to embark on a nation wide tour with Figurines.

If you live in the land of US-A you should go and see Dappled Cities Fly play somewhere near you. They are apparently playing a lot of shows in New York at the moment - as well as a 20-or-so city tour across the land with awesome Danish group Figurines.

A while ago we spoke about how Dappled Cities Fly and Red Riders closed their Sydney show with a cover of Guns N Roses' epic 'November Rain'. Well, as it turns out it was 'the thing to do' on their joint tour, closing every show with the infectious drunk sing-a-long anthem.
And now, through a joint venture between Ivy League and Etch N Sketch the cover version is seeing life in fantastic limited edition vinyl.
You can buy it from HERE. But act fast-like as they are sure to be snapped up pretty quickly.

For the million and one times that Canberra's Soft Tigers have been the support band for a show that I have attended - under the weight of the powers that mock me - I have somehow never managed to see them perform. Even at an Architecture In Helsinki show a few months back where I turned up at the exact right moment to miss dancey-dance megastar Muscles and catch the pop-tastic music of the Tigers I was double-crossed by some hidden clause in the DJ-before-all-bands rule.
So when I heard they were playing a five week (because there are five weeks in July) residency at one of my favourite Sydney venues, the Hopetoun Hotel, I was surely going to get my chance to see them live.
And I surprised myself when I went the very first week.
Dave Rennick of Dappled Cities Fly was the lone support act for the Tuesday night show. He was lovingly supported by a receptive crowd. I couldn't help but feel that his show, which was focused around the fragileness of his voice over a single guitar, would have sounded a whole lot better with an acoustic instrument. The quieter moments, which were occasionally lost in electric guitar fuzz, surely would have felt more honest with a more delicate sound to accompany. Apart from some interesting stripped back takes on familiar Dappled Cities Fly songs the set didn't leave a lasting impression on me.

Nope, that is not a typo. A-Reminder has some lovely video footage of the two Sydney bands combining on stage to end their Sydney show on Friday night with a fantastic, overly-triumphant cover of the Guns N Roses track.
This was most probably the last Sydney show for Dappled Cities Fly who head off to live and try their luck in the States. If the nice review of Granddance by Pitchfork is anything to go by, the Dappled kids are going to go down well with the Yanks. Good luck guys.

Oh, how it all gets soooo very crazy busy. Tonight (Wednesday) wild-pop-darling Har Mar Superstar is playing a dj set at 34B (next to Spectrum on Oxford St) and is rumored to be supported by dj sets from Fabrizio Moretti (of The Strokes) and Tony Bevilacqua (The Distillers). Hear what the cooler kids are listening to. It will cost you $15 to get in and the doors open at 9pm.
If dj's aren't really your thing, you can pop next door to Spectrum and see Talons. As we have said before they are incredibly good - and, although I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the two support bands (The Dirty Arrows and The Scream) before, Talons alone make this worth the $10 entry fee. Note: it was reported earlier that Tokyo Blonde would be headlining this show, it seems they have been mysteriously moved off the bill and now Talons are the main event.
Sydney lads, Dappled Cities Fly are planning a world-wide takeover. Step one of this is getting their video for Fire Fire Fire played on mtvU. You can help them achieve this and beat some other (pretty ordinary) acts by going HERE and voting until your ass falls off.
This week we have been busy setting up a Virb page for Polaroids of Androids. What is Virb you say? It's like MySpace without all the insane ugliness and bugs. We are still ironing out all the little creases etc on our page and prettying it right up, but sign up and become our friend. It's one of those 'never regretting that' kind of things.

Perth lads, The Silents have signed with Sydney-based indie label, Ivy League, home of Youth Group, Josh Pyke, Red Riders etc, so expect new things from them very soon. They deserve every success as well - I was lucky enough to catch them last year, and they are instantly addictive. Nice flashback sound without sounding too cliched.
Word is, that Sydney's most hyped band, The Ghosts, have signed with Modular as well. So expect more shows, and some releases from them later on this year.
If you haven't already bought your ticket to The Essential Festival on Anzac Day then you best to get in quickly, as little gossiping birds tell me that they are selling out faster than a Silverchair concert. Ok, maybe not that quick, but you would hate yourself for missing out on seeing Dappled Citites Fly before they head overseas, as well as a whole flock of fantastic local talent.
We have been listening to a whole load of new music around 'Polaroids HQ', so strap on your hopefulness hats as we prepare to roll out a new podcast episode sometime over the next couple of days. (Ps - get the latest episode HERE.)

So, as the powers that be would have it, I ended up at the Metro Theatre last night for a filming off MTV"s new [hip, rad, eh..] television show The Lair. I had been told by birds and flowers and execs that Die! Die! Die! were going to be playing and it would a cold day in a town called Helltown before I turned down a chance to see them, especially in front of a room full odf collars-up MTV wanksters. It"s no secret that I heart the shit out of the New Zealand punking trio so whenever they even sneeze in Sydney I have someone emailing me to tell me all about it. It"s kinda nice.
It turns out that, in addition to Die! Die! Die!, the bill also included Dappled Cities Fly, Pomomofo, The Tongue and those pop kiddles, Little Birdy.
Ok, so before we even get into the whole details about the pleasurable evening, this is the bestest photo ever feauring Alex from Dappled Cities Fly, sporting a Bon Jovi t-shirt..

As I arrived, to my pleasure, Die! Die! Die! were already ripping apart the bemused crowd. Tackling each other, moving themselves through the audience and, most importantly, not missing a single note.

As you can see via the gig guide, Sydney localised heroes, Dappled Cities Fly will be playing TWO shows at the fantastically nice Hopetoun Hotel this weekend.
But there is a slight twist in the mix.
Their Friday night show will consist entirely of songs from their first record A Smile, while the Saturday night show will only be stuff from the new record Granddance (read our review).
So, which record do you prefer?

Dappled Cities Fly headlined a show at the Gaelic Club on Saturday night that also featured theredsunband and Operator Please as supports.

With all the hype and praise surrounding the recent release of their latest album Granddance, the boys took to the stage like they had something to prove.

What followed was a tight and polished set, with spatterings of older fan favourites mixed with plenty of new material from the new album.
