Random Little Things: Wolf Parade, bloggers, Insound, Essential Festival, Talons, Violent Soho

The new Wolf Parade album has leaked. Get excited!

Ocker Zeal interviews Dom Alessio from Who The Bloody Hell Are They?

Insound have set up an interesting new way to purchase mp3's called Give More Get More as part of their new re-design.

Some great photos from Maria 12MC, who had a slightly more enjoyable experience at the Essential Festival than what we did.

Brisbane hates Talons. And we hate Brisbane. See how that works?

Gig Review: Essential Festival @ Gaelic Theatre - 25/04/2008

Last year when we went to the Essential Festival it was a little underwhelming. In fact, the free Slate 'n coke that we were given at one stage from a promo girl that looked a little bit like a cheap hooker was the highlight of the day. And I don't really like bourbon. Or cheap hookers.

It's hard to put a finger on the reason for the high amount of suck-ness. The line-up wasn't shit. In fact any festival that has Shocking Pinks, Talons, Richard In Your Mind, Straight Arrows and Ratatat on the same bill should be enough for at least a triple orgasm (maybe a quadruple). And even though I haven't had the best experiences at the Gaelic Theatre in regards to the general sound it's hardly enough to spoil a day of well delivered live music.

Throughout the afternoon I 'hung out' (and also 'chilled') with a bunch of people who, like me, had received free tickets. I wouldn't have bought a ticket. Fifty dollars seems a bit rich for a bunch of local and TWO international acts (for the record New Zealand isn't really 'international'), especially considering I can see the three or four decent local acts on the same bill for $10 on a lucky night in the BIG city.

Side note: despite all reports that tickets sales hadn't got very well, they were still trying to sell them on the door for $55!

Anyways.. I got there at midday (when the doors opened) to catch thee beloved Talons do their thing.

The prospect of pulling this off, and the fact that Nick Harte and co are playing on the nice little Gaelic Theatre attic stage, excites me greatly.

Essential Festival cheap ticket offer

Obviously, ticket sales aren't going great for the Anzac Day festival with bargain basement $35 tickets now being offered to the public. That's fifteen more dollarzzz you can gamble away on games of 2-up AND you get a full day of entertainment - including TWO international acts, one washed up Aussie act and about 40 million up-n-comers.

Simply, head over to Moshtix and enter 'GURG' as the special offer code as you make your purchase.

Word is that these cheap tickets are strictly limited - so if yer a bit of a tight ass who didn't really wanna fork over a fifty for a day of kick-ass live music you might wanna act quick like.

And the full line-up again..

Bluejuice, The Paper Scissors and The Dirty Secrets added to Essential Festival line-up

Whoa.. Essential Festival is starting to become the festival that just keeps on giving.

Obviously, hearing our loud 'YEAH!' of excitement following the last announcement, the organisers have added even more awesome local acts to the Sydney line-up in the form of trip-hip-hoppers, Bluejuice, local live favourites, The Paper Scissors, and Perth indie rockers, The Dirty Secrets.

The now (complete) line-up is...

Ratatat, Shocking Pinks, Bluejuice, The Paper Scissors, The Dirty Secrets, Regurgitator, Grafton Primary, Dardanelles, The Devoted Few, The E.L.F, Gaslight Radio, The John Steel Singers, The Seabellies, The Silents, Reptiles, Talons, Straight Arrows, Richard In Your Mind, Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers, Regular John, WOW, Bird Automatic, Cloud Control, The Holidays, Cassette Kids, Pip Branson Corporation, Centipede, Erin Marshall, The Khan Brothers and Gin Winmore.

Tickets appear to be still available for the festival, which is happening next Friday (Anzac Day public holiday), and you can pick them for around $50 via Moshtix.

Final line-up for Essential Festival unveiled

Even with the awesome two international acts (Shocking Pinks and Ratatat) the first line-up announcement for the Essential Festival didn't really get us all that giggly and excited.

The second (and final) list of artists has us moderately more 'whoooooo' over the whole thing.

  • Talons
  • Straight Arrows
  • Richard In Your Mind
  • Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers
  • Regular John
  • WOW
  • Bird Automatic
  • Cloud Control
  • The Holidays
  • Cassette Kids
  • Pip Branson Corporation
  • Centipede
  • Erin Marshall
  • The Khan Brothers
  • Gin Winmore

Fuck it, even with all that awesome, the thought of the Gaelic sound will more than likely drive us to the My Disco show instead.

It should also be noted that these are the bands that will be at the Sydney leg of the festival. Although the core bands are the same, Melbourne has a slightly different 'second string' team. Check the festival website for that info.

Tickets are on sale NOW via Moshtix and will set you back around $55.

Essential Festival 2008 line-up

Essential Festival is back like deep fried crack for oh eight with what some would describe as a fucking great line-up.

With INTERNATIONAL acts (for the first time!)..

  • Ratatat
  • Shocking Pinks

.. and local peepz...

  • Regurgitator
  • Grafton Primary
  • Dardanelles
  • The Devoted Few
  • The E.L.F
  • Gaslight Radio
  • The John Steel Singers
  • The Seabellies
  • The Silents
  • Reptiles

The local acts aren't really doing it for us BUT any festival with both Ratatat AND Shocking Pinks on the bill is surely going to get our hard earned cash.

Also, for the first time the festival will bust out of the confines of being a Sydney-only festival and will also travel down to the land of Melbourne.

Essential Festival @ Surry Hills - 25/04/07

Yeah, we should probably speed up with timely things like this. Last Wednesday the Essential Festival was held in Surry Hills. My memory has already escaped me about what happens, but general impressions were that it was good. Here is some photos.

Snoozing is losing?

Is your scrolling broken? No..? Then scroll on down to see and/or listen to the latest podcast episode with a whole host of new songs that have been beating around our heads and office places over the past couple. Yeah, remember podcasts? Well .. guess what... back.. Clickity.

Essential Festival yesterday was awesome fun and entertainment. A review will soon be churned out once we get our loyal monkey type-writing service back up and functioning.

If you are hungry for some new unheard music to tie you over until the weekend then The Luck Express is coming in. New Zealand rockers Collapsing Cities are creating more than a bit of a ruckus on the other side of the river between us and them. Their music is incredibly infectious and addictive with similar stylings to several others before them, but at the same time, completely free from direct comparisons. With a debut album in the works you will surely you will hear more of them soon enough, but if you can't wait to be the first in line - you can purchase their self-titled EP over at Cheese On Toast or head over to their MySpace and listen to a couple of tracks. You have been warned.

Essential-ness

Just quickly.. moments before the blissness of mid-week day off-ness comes into play..

.. the Essential Festival is on tomorrow and for those looking for playing times for the bands.. well HERE YOU GO. Luckily, the action is all indoors so this shitty (except if your a farmer) weather that has been killing the productivity of Sydney over the past couple of days won't be a factor.

And.. see you all at The Straight Arrows show tonight.. right?

Is Tuesday the new Friday? Maybe.

Anzac Day is perfectly planted in the middle of this week to nicely break everything up and create another weekend out of nothing this Tuesday night.. and there are more than a few things going on. The Basics finish up the Sydney part of their month long tri-state residency at the Hopetoun Hotel, supported lovingly by Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers. That is a tempting offer - BUT at the Abercrombie Hotel there is a whole lot more action with The Straight Arrows, Cuthbert again (doubling up ..) and Richard In Your Mind and Papa Vs Pretty. Holy shittt that is crazy nice.

On Wednesday the Essential Festival is on at Surry Hills and, with some sort of dream line-up is very hard to ignore for any music loving guppy. At this point you might as well start drifting into the weekend - and there is no better way to do it than with the help of the lovely Sandwich Club kids and their end of the month show at Candy's Apartment.

Oh my.. it's not even the weekend yet.. and as you can see Friday night is crazy hectic as well with shows by My Disco, Youth Group and Midnight Juggernauts at different spots all over town - satisfying whatever your taste may be. If (and that's a fairly large IF) there is still juice in the tank by Saturday evening then it's going to be pretty hard to go past the Straight Arrows show at Newtown Hotel. I am dying to see this band in action and this seems like the perfect, strange, small venue where I want to see them (although Tuesday night at Abercrombie seems too good to be true)... Whoa.. better sleep up tonight kiddles, this could be a pretty darn bizzy week.

Signings etc

Perth lads, The Silents have signed with Sydney-based indie label, Ivy League, home of Youth Group, Josh Pyke, Red Riders etc, so expect new things from them very soon. They deserve every success as well - I was lucky enough to catch them last year, and they are instantly addictive. Nice flashback sound without sounding too cliched.

Word is, that Sydney's most hyped band, The Ghosts, have signed with Modular as well. So expect more shows, and some releases from them later on this year.

If you haven't already bought your ticket to The Essential Festival on Anzac Day then you best to get in quickly, as little gossiping birds tell me that they are selling out faster than a Silverchair concert. Ok, maybe not that quick, but you would hate yourself for missing out on seeing Dappled Citites Fly before they head overseas, as well as a whole flock of fantastic local talent.

We have been listening to a whole load of new music around 'Polaroids HQ', so strap on your hopefulness hats as we prepare to roll out a new podcast episode sometime over the next couple of days. (Ps - get the latest episode HERE.)
