The sandstone, convict-era surrounds of Hyde Park Barracks perfectly contrast the futuristic electronic chaos of Battles. The dusty floor of the courtyard is a million miles away from the industrial spaces of inner-city life that seem married to the precisely rehearsed and perfectly executed sounds of the New York four piece.
Pivot opening things up with an incredibly entertaining set. It has been some time since I have had the chance to see the instrumental Sydney outfit and they have definitely spent some time hardened up their sound. Their new songs hit the audience with a lot more force than their previous work which focused primarily around atmospheric build-up than playing to their strengths of chaotic rhythmic sounds and the creation of a wall of sound that occasionally throws boulders at the listener when they stroll past.
They have a new album on the way, a single before that and a snippet of a new track Didn't I Furious up on theirSpace now. Even if their newly released stuff bottles only 8% of their intensity that they delivered at this show it will be awesome.

When the time came to put together our annual list of favourite albums of the past twelve months the task seemed a whole lot easier than last year. With the help of our rating system we were able to shortlist the albums from 2007 that we really enjoyed.

Batrider - Tara
Brutal, stripped back, dirty bath water music. You can keep your polished tiresome songs and we will keep worshiping every action of this delightful New Zealand four piece.

There were some really good local music videos made this year.
Architecture In Helsinki - Debbie
We are slightly biased because our loving pal Andy is the star of this video. Those that caught the Helsinki kids at Homebake this year would have also be treated to a great drunken rant from Andy 'Three Fingers' Davis as part of the chaotic halftime entertainment.

The Mess Hall - Keep Walking
Bizarre and very fitting video for the Sydney duo.

1. Dead Farmers - Violence
Is there any better way to open an album of the best songs from 2007 than with the feedback driven noise of Sydney's Dead Farmers? From the Violence 7" single.
2. Radiohead - 15 Step
Krunk music. The opening track and defining moment of Radiohead's In Rainbows album.

We already knew about Bjork, and everybody knows Brian Wilson is opening things with a (free!) gig in the Domain... But there are still some great surprises in store with the full line-up of The Sydney Festival being announced this morning, including:
In addition, the first night of the festival (January 5) features a bunch of FREE events, including Spank Rock, Paul Kelly and Plump DJs, as well as the aforementioned Brian Wilson.
The only problem now seems to be the Battles/Bjork clash on January 23, but with tickets for the latter starting at $135, it may not be such a hard choice.
Tickets for all events go on sale from tomorrow from a variety of outlets. The full run-down can be found at the official website.

The initial lineup for the 2008 Big Day Out has been announced, and is as follows...
This would have to be the strongest Big Day Out lineup in years, especially given the increasingly saturated Australian festival market... and there's more to come. Late January should provide for some awesome sideshow action.
In addition to the first announcement, organisers have brought in some ticketing changes. Sydney festival-goers will be limited to 2 tickets each. Furthermore, the sales dates for each city have been staggered to relieve pressure on website ticketing. Also, as was the case last year, 10,000 tickets will be held aside for an online ballot.
The Sydney leg kicks off on Friday, 25 January and is on sale October 10. More information can be found at the Big Day Out website.

This review would have been completed about 20 hours ago if I didn't spend the better part of today re-assembling my head after Battles exploded it last night. There were fragments scattered all over Sydney, and mainly because I have a large down-syndrome like cranium, it took me a long time to put it all together.
Lame intros about my own disfigured appearance aside - Battles' performed an extremely awesome show last night.
The early birds were treated to a rare long-ish set (ie. more than 30 minutes) from Melbourne's minimal masters - My Disco. They lost me a little bit in the middle with some slower moments and pauses between songs but won me back as I knew they would. Their tightness is exceptional.
Battles' performance was almost flawless. The multi-layered sounds that are all over their fantastic Mirrored album were performed unbelievably accurately - mostly due to the fact that all four members of the band were at least playing two instruments at any given moment. Their jaw-dropping, awesome talent and unbelievable band unison made my insides do backflips of joy.
Even the crowded venue - and it's continually flat sound - wasn't enough to ruin my enjoyment of their performance. Atlas and Tonto were definite highlights - but throughout their hour long set there was hardly a moment that wasn't commanding my full attention.

The indistinguishable words that come through that crazy vocoder...
People won't be people when they hear this sound
That's been glowing in the dark at the edge of town
People won't be people, no
The people won't be people when they hear this sound
Won't you show me what begins at the edge of town
The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook

The kitchen is the cook
The scissors are the barbers
