Even with the awesome two international acts (Shocking Pinks and Ratatat) the first line-up announcement for the Essential Festival didn't really get us all that giggly and excited.
The second (and final) list of artists has us moderately more 'whoooooo' over the whole thing.
Fuck it, even with all that awesome, the thought of the Gaelic sound will more than likely drive us to the My Disco show instead.
It should also be noted that these are the bands that will be at the Sydney leg of the festival. Although the core bands are the same, Melbourne has a slightly different 'second string' team. Check the festival website for that info.
Tickets are on sale NOW via Moshtix and will set you back around $55.

Occasionally, the stars align and we are treated to a show which showcases just how many special bands occupy this town. Saturday was one of those rare moments when a trio of very different - yet all equally impressive - bands were presented to us like a feast to a hungry teenage girl who is thinking about starting an eating disorder because of the pressure of Dolly magazine.
Straight Arrows kicked things off to a fairly empty main room. Their jangly garage punk is starting to sound slightly more refined, yet still packed full of the carefree approach which makes them such a pleasure to watch.

There are several things that make Richard In Your Mind a fairly unique Sydney band (besides their sound)...
They bring their own explosive confetti fireworks...

They are wear Buddy Holly glasses - even the drummer - who doesn't need them.

What is it with long weekends that prompts venues to put on special events and kick out such awesome shows?
Tonight, there is a joint album launch for Kes and Sly Hats at the Hopetoun Hotel. With awesome supports in the form of Rand & Holland and The Garbage And The Flowers this is very much the pick of the night, especially if you enjoy your music melodic and 'soundscapy'. You can get in for $10 as well, which is only slightly more expensive than 'free'.
Tomorrow night (Sunday, for those that have lost me already) there are two awesome (mini) festivals going on. The South By Inner West Festival at Annandale Hotel may have an incredibly cheeeeeesy name, but it does also have a barrage of awesome bands playing - seven, in fact - all for the measly price of 20 shucks. The line-up includes The Panda Band, Cut Off Your Hands, Bright Yellow, Moscow Schoolboy and some other equally great bands.
If you get to the door at the Annandale Hotel and it's either sold out or you are $4 short of the entry fee, you can hitch-hike yourself over to Spectrum for the Upside Down Festival. You will be treated to a whole load of great bands, including Spod, Whitley, The Seabellies, Richard In Your Mind and a bucketload more.
If you're SUPER cheap and/or all your bills are due and/or you have been badly robbed DO NOT WORRY - there is still something for you. Over at the Hopetoun Hotel legendary indie rockers, Peabody, are showcasing their new line-up and songs. They will headline what is surely the greatest ever mish-mashed line-up of all time as they will be supported by one of our faved bands of Sydney Talons, as well as those delicious kids from Canberra, Soft Tigers. How much will this barrage of awesome set you back I hear you ask? You guessed it - ZERO dollars.

We battled through this thing called 'bad weather' last night and went out to see The Straight Arrows at the Abercrombie Hotel. All week I have been exciting about seeing these guys on Saturday, but then when this last minute show came up (with an awesome support line-up to boot) it was all just too tempting.
They are a breathe of fresh air in an overly predictable and copycat 'scene' that I find myself increasingly becoming frustrated and bored by. Maybe it's the fact the whole thing is a bit of a side project that's gaining momentum, or just the sloppy style of their sound, but The Straight Arrows put forward a care-free attitude and, for lack of a better word at hand, wildness that I haven't seen in some time.
Unfortunately, I didn't arrive in time to see the whole bunch of fantastic support bands, including Papa vs Pretty, Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers and Danger Of Death (famous for being 'that band with the song about vomiting on your city'). I did see some final moments of Richard In Your Mind and they were as entertaining as always.

Anzac Day is perfectly planted in the middle of this week to nicely break everything up and create another weekend out of nothing this Tuesday night.. and there are more than a few things going on. The Basics finish up the Sydney part of their month long tri-state residency at the Hopetoun Hotel, supported lovingly by Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers. That is a tempting offer - BUT at the Abercrombie Hotel there is a whole lot more action with The Straight Arrows, Cuthbert again (doubling up ..) and Richard In Your Mind and Papa Vs Pretty. Holy shittt that is crazy nice.
On Wednesday the Essential Festival is on at Surry Hills and, with some sort of dream line-up is very hard to ignore for any music loving guppy. At this point you might as well start drifting into the weekend - and there is no better way to do it than with the help of the lovely Sandwich Club kids and their end of the month show at Candy's Apartment.
Oh my.. it's not even the weekend yet.. and as you can see Friday night is crazy hectic as well with shows by My Disco, Youth Group and Midnight Juggernauts at different spots all over town - satisfying whatever your taste may be. If (and that's a fairly large IF) there is still juice in the tank by Saturday evening then it's going to be pretty hard to go past the Straight Arrows show at Newtown Hotel. I am dying to see this band in action and this seems like the perfect, strange, small venue where I want to see them (although Tuesday night at Abercrombie seems too good to be true)... Whoa.. better sleep up tonight kiddles, this could be a pretty darn bizzy week.

Keeping it short, on Sunday I attended Keegstock: A birthday party for Keegan from Sydney band The Russian Brides.
From the top, Keegan and the band kicked off the tail end of the night as The Russian Brides, complete with keyboards and horns, Beatles covers, balloons and confetti. Fantastic.
Hand Me My Jetpack played next and quite literally (but also more figuratively) blew myself and hopefully everyone else in the room away. They are made up of 1 former member of I (Love) Space, as well as 2 members of Degrees K, and added up to awesome. Undoubtedly the nights highlight.
