Saturday night concreted the FACT that Die! Die! Die! are almost certainly the most entertaining live act in the universe. Their stage presence, crowd interaction and general punk ruckusness is unrivaled by any band from the past, present or future.
The night was kicked off by The Ripping Dylans who played an entertaining half-hour set. They were a little bit sloppier than normal but their general style and the way in which they present themselves supports this. The Fait Accompli kids down the front did I lovely job trying to get the early bird crowd into the Dylans' set. Unfortunately, however, the large-ish venue didn't help the band out and for the most part they seemed to just be trying to fight their way through their allocated slot.
By the time Talons took to the stage for the middle portion of the night, the crowd had grown to an impressive size AND I had successfully become mildly shitfaced. Their set was the usual fury of beautiful punk noise. Sadly, however, the lack of songs dedicated to my facial hair limits their mention in this review.
And then came the main event...

So, Australia Day is upon us - the national holiday where it is actually against the law NOT to get shitfaced and barbeque some livestock. With the Big Day Out in town and the Sydney Festival still going there is definately no shortage of things going on.
Believe it or not there are still tickets available for LCD Soundsystem's show at Enmore Theatre tomorrow night. We hear you still might be able to snap up front dance floor spots if yo act quick like as well.
If you have over-spent during this crazy month of January and are looking for the cheaper option then the Annandale Hotel might be just what you need. They are having a listening party for the Hottest 100, as well as $10 jugs, $10 all-yo-can-eat wings and ping pong. But that's hardly even the best part as, once the countdown wraps up and hopefully Silverchair haven't taken out the top spot, there is the 'afterparty' featuring an incredibly solid line-up.
It will set you back a measly $10 and is a solid three plus hours of awesomeness:
7.00pm - Tokyo Blonde
7.30pm - The Detours
8.00pm - The Ripping Dylans
8.30pm - Bird Automatic
9.10pm - Talons
10.00pm - Peabody

1. Dead Farmers - Violence
Is there any better way to open an album of the best songs from 2007 than with the feedback driven noise of Sydney's Dead Farmers? From the Violence 7" single.
2. Radiohead - 15 Step
Krunk music. The opening track and defining moment of Radiohead's In Rainbows album.

After giving ourselves a mild reacharound the other day in regards to the fact that two of our favourite bands had reached the final we were quietly confident that one of them was going to be playing at Homebake this year.
Talons destroyed through their set, The Ripping Dylans were solidly entertaining and Hand Me My Jetpack finished will possibly the best performance by them that I have had the chance to see. After the show it was pretty much cemented in our heads that Homebake was suddenly starting to look a whole load better. We started drafting the letters to all our friends who were going to the festival telling them to make sure they got in early to check out an awesome band.
But alas.. it turns out the only band on the night that wasn't a thrill to watch won the competition.
Congrats to Bridge Mary Kiss, 17-year old kids who seem to have a strong following and from all reports are nice lads. It all could have turned out so much better though.

The four bands who have made it through the competition and earned the right to battle it out tonight for a spot at this year's Homebake Festival are:
Not tooting our horn too much BUT (toot fucking toot) two of those four bands played at our party this year. Call us tastemakers much?
The action kicks off at about 8pm and it will cost you $6 to get in.

My excitement was high over the idea of getting to see Die! Die! Die! perform their new songs live for the first time. Ever since I got my dirty mitts on their album a few weeks back I have been dying to see and hear them live.
And they didn't disapoint.
I blame Morris Iemma's fantastically unreliable rail system for the reason I unfortunately missed Fait Accompli's opening set. I assume that even though the crowd would have only been small - they completely destroyed it.
The Ripping Dylans were the second act of the night...

We are only now putting ourselves back together from what turned out to be a pretty hectic weekend. With our party on Saturday night and the final organisational steps for making one of the key member of our 'staff' transform into 'an international correspondent' it was obviously a little bit insane-like.
It all starting on Friday night with Walrus' single launch at the Annandale Hotel...

The Ripping Dylans opened the night and were incredibly awesome. Treating the early-birds to a performance that was a lovely balance of controlled noise and rock 'n' roll attitude.

You know those hairy Sydney guys that play bluesy, foot tappy good times rock?

You know, Walrus.
Yeah, well they are about to put out a DOUBLE A side titled Funky Monkey/Marilyn Monroe (but not on vinyl... how does that work?), and to celebrate are playing a launching show at the Annandale Hotel on the 12th October. Whats more The Ripping Dylans and Talons are there in support. A tasty bonus as if you even needed one.
Usually this would go straight to the gig section, but we thought the fact that they had an amusing new promo photo AND that the bass player bribed me with a case of beer last week warranted a showing here in the news.

Boom! The Exploders are exploding onto the road (ok, no more lame PR speak) for a tour to support their new album Easy and the Sun which is out August 4 through Rubber Records. For Sydney folks you can see them on the 10th August at the Hopetoun supported by The Shake Up and The Ripping Dylans, but there's also gigs in Brisbane, Melbourne, Geelong and Adelaide in support of the release.
In other news, one of our favourites Walrus will be supporting some pretty big but recently quiet bands in the form of Rocket Science and Front End Loader. Front End Loader would especially be a highlight as they are probably one of the more genuine acts to come out of Australia in the last 10 years. If it sounds like your thing head on down to the Annandale Hotel tomorrow night. You may want to get tickets early though.
