Gig Review: Below Par Records Showcase @ Paddington Town Hall - 26/07/2007

It's hard not to admire Below Par Records. What started as high school project in Sydney surburbia has tranformed and grown into a successful Australian record label. A million years ago they used to throw random little 'showcase' parties for the bands that were on their label.

On Thursday night they brought back these said showcases and threw a party at Paddington Town Hall - featuring performances by The Scare, Something With Numbers, Soft Tigers and Kisschasy.

The Scare..

Somethings are immediately noticeable about The Scare..

  1. They sound very British (even when taunting the audience to move forward).
  2. They spit a lot.
  3. The lead singer (in between screaming at random people in the crowd) is a little bit camp.

Camp?

Gig Review: Soft Tigers + Dave Rennick @ Hopetoun Hotel - 03/07/2007

For the million and one times that Canberra's Soft Tigers have been the support band for a show that I have attended - under the weight of the powers that mock me - I have somehow never managed to see them perform. Even at an Architecture In Helsinki show a few months back where I turned up at the exact right moment to miss dancey-dance megastar Muscles and catch the pop-tastic music of the Tigers I was double-crossed by some hidden clause in the DJ-before-all-bands rule.

So when I heard they were playing a five week (because there are five weeks in July) residency at one of my favourite Sydney venues, the Hopetoun Hotel, I was surely going to get my chance to see them live.

And I surprised myself when I went the very first week.

Dave Rennick of Dappled Cities Fly was the lone support act for the Tuesday night show. He was lovingly supported by a receptive crowd. I couldn't help but feel that his show, which was focused around the fragileness of his voice over a single guitar, would have sounded a whole lot better with an acoustic instrument. The quieter moments, which were occasionally lost in electric guitar fuzz, surely would have felt more honest with a more delicate sound to accompany. Apart from some interesting stripped back takes on familiar Dappled Cities Fly songs the set didn't leave a lasting impression on me.

Gig Review: Young and Restless + Cut Off Your Hands @ Spectrum - 16/06/2007

Two bands that are quickly becoming stalwarts on the local scene teamed up on Saturday night for a promising double bill.

Canberra's (Melbourne's?) Young and Restless have still not released any recorded material, yet fans of the band have yet to tire of their energetic and often brutal live performances. Their show consists of front woman Karina screaming and moving about the front of the stage, while the 3 guys on stringed instruments try to get as close as possible to her with their instruments without knocking her out cold. It all adds up to some weird sexually tensioned performance that leaves always leaves one feeling satisfied but a little bit uneasy.

New Zealand's Cut Off Your Hands live show is also infamous, but in place of the strange instrument gangbang is the lone front man diving into the crowd and spasming all over the place, while the rest of the group are content to sit back and pump out the catchy riffs to the ever appreciative audience.

This was also supposed to be our first chance to see Soft Tigers, but due to scheduling conflicts (aka getting too drunk beforehand) we missed them, which we are mightily dissapointed about.

Long weekend activities

What is it with long weekends that prompts venues to put on special events and kick out such awesome shows?

Tonight, there is a joint album launch for Kes and Sly Hats at the Hopetoun Hotel. With awesome supports in the form of Rand & Holland and The Garbage And The Flowers this is very much the pick of the night, especially if you enjoy your music melodic and 'soundscapy'. You can get in for $10 as well, which is only slightly more expensive than 'free'.

Tomorrow night (Sunday, for those that have lost me already) there are two awesome (mini) festivals going on. The South By Inner West Festival at Annandale Hotel may have an incredibly cheeeeeesy name, but it does also have a barrage of awesome bands playing - seven, in fact - all for the measly price of 20 shucks. The line-up includes The Panda Band, Cut Off Your Hands, Bright Yellow, Moscow Schoolboy and some other equally great bands.

If you get to the door at the Annandale Hotel and it's either sold out or you are $4 short of the entry fee, you can hitch-hike yourself over to Spectrum for the Upside Down Festival. You will be treated to a whole load of great bands, including Spod, Whitley, The Seabellies, Richard In Your Mind and a bucketload more.

If you're SUPER cheap and/or all your bills are due and/or you have been badly robbed DO NOT WORRY - there is still something for you. Over at the Hopetoun Hotel legendary indie rockers, Peabody, are showcasing their new line-up and songs. They will headline what is surely the greatest ever mish-mashed line-up of all time as they will be supported by one of our faved bands of Sydney Talons, as well as those delicious kids from Canberra, Soft Tigers. How much will this barrage of awesome set you back I hear you ask? You guessed it - ZERO dollars.

Soft Tigers are everywhere

Those lovable kids from Canberra, Soft Tigers, have been playing a whole load of shows around Sydney over the past few months, and they are about to do even more!

Firstly, they have been named as the support band for the Young and Restless / Cut Off Your Hands Sydney show at Spectrum on the 16th of June. Also, they have been given one of the New South Wales supports for the Expatriate tour, performing at the Wollongong, Newcastle, Sydney and Canberra on the 28th, 29th 30th of June and 25th of July respectively.

If that wasn't enough, or you want to see them at their own headlining show, they will be taking up a residency at the Hopetoun Hotel and playing every Tuesday in July. For people like me, who have made plans to see them numerous times but, for whatever reason, not being able to, this is perfect. For them, this should see them cover all bases, and hopefully get some new fans out of their hard work.

My Sydney Riot is on tomorrow

Tomorrow the My Sydney Riot Festival is on at East Village, Darlinghurst. Besides the impressive array of artists on the bill (Talons, Fait Accompli, Bird Automatic, Soft Tigers, Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers) the folks behind this have a great reputation of finding some awesome unknown bands. On several occasions they have introduced me to several acts that have gone almost immediately onto my 'awesome list' so there is a little bit of a guarantee that you will discover your new favourite band at this event.

It seems there are still tickets available and I imagine it would be fair bet to take 'see who you wake up tomorrow' approach and buy some on the door as well.. but no guarantees there.

The whole thing kicks off at midday and all the info, playing times etc that you need can be found HERE.

Soft Tigers cover Architecture In Helsinki, new Figurines song and the first sneak peak of the new Beastie Boys instrumental stuff

The week is [almost] over and yet we still have soooo much stuff overloading our inboxes..

We really should have included this in the Architecture In Helsinki post from yesterday, but White Boy has posted a cover of Architecture In Helsinki's Heart It Races by the Soft Tigers. Possibly made purely to celebrate the fact they had been given a support slot. It's an interesting take on the song as well.

As we have said before we love the catchy, super-addictive sound of Danish rock-peeps Figurines so when we saw that they have a new song on their Myspace page we got crazy excited. The song, entitled Hey Girl, is the first single from the upcoming thirdd LP and, although it's a slight change to their current style (very very slight actually), it's a fantastic piece of pop-rockness. LISTEN now!.

As we all know by now the new Beastie Boys record is going to be 100% instrumental. The first sneak peak is a track called Off The Grid and you get a sneak preview video at Brooklyn Vegan as well as the complete tracklisting for the album. I am not much of a fan of The Beasties, especially their newer stuff, but this does sound quite interesting and, the album, to be titled The Mix Up sounds like it's going to be a little bit special.
