Parades
Dead Nationale
Sydney's Parades have been playing shows around town for a some time now. Although I have been interested in their fairly unique style for a while, Dead Nationale is the first track that has really grabbed me my the ears, shook me violently and caused me not only to pay attention but also lust for more material.
The backbone of the track is the chaotic splattering of drums and the persistent rhythm focus, which is perfectly contradicted by the more laid back melodic elements and gentle harmonies. This fantastic use of contrast is continued as the group melt together a tightly executed pop hook and - what sounds like - the results of a unhinged jam session.
The style of this track isn't too far removed from that of fellow Sydneysiders Ghoul and megastick fanfare in the way it is not only stripped right back to it's raw rhythmic elements, but also because it refuses to follow a fixed path or direction.
You can catch Parades playing a FREE show this Wednesday with Shady Lane at Oxford Art Factory. They will also be playing a single launch show (for this song?) at the start of May at the Hopetoun.
