Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

For the most part we - the editorial 'staff' who fill this website with words - agree on what we like and dislike. Well, we thought we did. Until this band called Vampire Weekend came along.

Never before has an album that we have decided to review caused such a differing of opinions. Because of this we have decided to review this album in two parts.

Part One:

Vampire Weekend sound like a bunch of rich, white, college students who really like soukous and Afro-pop music. It's funny, cause that's exactly what they are. They make no apologies or attempt to mask this in fact in any way. That is maybe the reason they have been able to make one of the most refreshing and uninhibited releases I have heard in some time.

Although, impact wise at least, it doesn't hit the listener with as much force as some other debut records (ie. The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeah's) it is still something energetic and unique in a time when 'indie' is increasingly becoming more of a dirty word. The comparisons to The Strokes can also be extended to the barrage of [internet] hype that surrounds this release which, if you have somehow been able to ignore, make this album all the more enjoyable.

Part Two:

(Libertines - drugs) + (Paul Simons' Graceland - the good African bits) + The theme song to the 90's cooking show 'Consuming Passions' = Vampire Weekend.

umm... not sure.. I'll take a guess though: Part One: Mike Part Two: Jonny

On a sidenote, just been listening to the album. Interesting mix of musical types... overall not sure what to make of the album, maybe it will grow on me. It kinda feels like its missing something and I find his voice a bit whiney at times. I do like the songs "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" and "Campus" though.

yeh .. i feel at times it's like Phoenix.. in the West Indies or something..

and ... everyone knows Mike is 'the funny one' so.. yeah .. he did part 2... Denmark hates hipster NY bands.. apparently..

On first impression ... I don't get it either. So was that score aggregated?

Jonny Yes Yes

yeh... something like ...

((score1 + score2)/2) + a-little-bit-more = final-score

((7 + 1) / 2) + 2 = 6

ohhh of course Mike is the funny one... how could I have got that wrong...

Triple J have Vampire Weekend on pretty high rotation at the moment. For the second morning in a row they played one of their songs (and I'm only in the car and listening to the radio for 10mins). I'm sure they will kill any of our happy thoughts towards the band with overplay.

I saw a band in Denmark. They wore space suits with helmets like they were Daft Punk and played heavy metal. Then half way through a person dressed in a purple blob costume came on stage and started doing the robot dance. Fun times.

i thought Triple J would play them in about six months time.. normally they are at least a year behind the 'internet'
