TV For Cats - End Silence

Essentially, Melbourne's TV For Cats are doing things that have all been done before. They have taken proven formulas of writing good rock songs and then smashed them a little bit until they are only mildly recognisable in their new state. The emotion driven vocals, laced over a sound that melts together strong, forceful guitar riffs with occasional splatters of looping synth gives them a sound that is refreshing and exciting.

The inclusion of electronic devices, as opposed to advertising in the local newspaper for two extra members, is the main thing that seperates the duo from a dozen or so other decent local bands that are currently doing a similar thing, at such a high standard. It adds a wider dimension of sound to the pillar of strong guitar riffs that they build on, fills in the gaps between organic moments and throws the surprise element into each of their songs which we are such suckers for.

Although the first three tracks are tasty offerings it's the final lap around - Call And Response - that really hits the sweetest of sweet spots. The hurricane-like looping intro brings us to the clearing where strained lone vocals are thrown out unprotected to fend for themselves in the big cruel world. Harmonies are occasionally injected at various points but the song never relaxes or gets stuck in any pattern that the listener can grow comfortable with. Even when the catchy chorus is thrown in, it's only for a short time before another electronic loop builds everything up once more. The duo could have spread the ideas that they cram into this song over about three or so seperate tracks - but they didn't. This, combined with their unique twist on what is fast becoming a recycling plant of a local rock scene, is why we think these guys are a cut above the rest and definitely worthy of your time.
