Dappled Cities Fly + theredsunband + Operator Please @ Gaelic Theatre - 25th November 2006

Dappled Cities Fly headlined a show at the Gaelic Club on Saturday night that also featured theredsunband and Operator Please as supports.

Dappled Cities Fly

With all the hype and praise surrounding the recent release of their latest album Granddance, the boys took to the stage like they had something to prove.

What followed was a tight and polished set, with spatterings of older fan favourites mixed with plenty of new material from the new album.

The performance was tremendous, however apart from the select few down the front it seemed the crowd was more comfortable sitting back and taking it all in than joining in on the party, perhaps a little surprisingly considering the anticipation that has surrounded the Granddance release particularly in the Sydney scene.

While it was clear the older songs were what the crowd identified most, the newer songs showed plenty of promise which bodes well for future forays into the overseas market for the local lads.

theredsunband

theredsunband supported, however without much crowd support or interaction, their performance quickly slid into and uninspired going through of the motions. Dissapointing from a band that can and has delivered much more.

Up and coming Brisbane band Operator Please also supported and showed why many people are expecting big things from them in the future.

Dappled Cities Fly (no we are NOT dropping the 'fly') are now making children's music. The Sydney group will play the music of Australian composer Kyls Burtland on a new Playhouse Disney series called "Alphabreaks" which introduces preschoolers to the letters of the alphabet with the help of musical instruments and original music. The 26-part series, to be televised in Australia and New Zealand, will be directed by Tom Spark who has previously created music videos for the likes of The Cat Empire, Thirsty Merc, The Vines, Vanessa Amorosi and Gyroscope. #

Pitchfork reviews The Curse Of Company album and, in the midst of the nice(ish) write-up, claims that Tim Rogers is a member of not only Curse of Company but also theredsunband. Whut? Did the fact-checking intern have the day off?

Update: Martin Tran (via email) has pointed out to us that the reviewer was more than likely referring to Jack Ladder - as his real name is Tim Rogers. He also states that "they [still] got it wrong, Jack Ladder (Tim Rogers) is not in Sarah Kelly's band. And they're not two different people in the Curse of Company". Thanks for the info, Martin. #

There is some joke about 'dream pop duo', angst-driven harmonies and political hip-hop, but I just can't seem to find the punchline.
