News Flash: Dardanelles DON'T use a backing track

The other day in the midst of our recollection of the Essential Festival we mentioned that Dardanelles' set seemed to be assisted by a hidden backing track..

I self-quote:

Correct me if I am wrong but I am sure they had a backing track hidden somewhere on the stage that powered about 90-95% of their performance.

Overnight, we received an email from Josh, the lead singer of the band, who cleared a few things up regarding their live performance.

The closest thing we have to a backing track, isn't a backing track at all. It's an garden-variety MPC 1000 sampler, which runs in tandem with a garden variety Micro Korg, which is alternately used as a MIDI trigger, and it's own live line.

It was so hidden, you might have seen it, sitting on a keyboard stand strapped to a guitar pedal case-lid with gaffer tape, in the front-middle of the stage.

A quick search around the place, and this is what the sampler the band uses roughly looks like...

We stand corrected. Apologies in the direction of Dardanelles for any damage caused by our off-hand claim. We should have kept with our original suspicions that they are in fact 'one of those clever electro-rock bands' that actually doesn't need a laptop to fuel their sound.

Josh was also quick to point out that he wasn't trying to defend the overall suckiness of the show...

But that's all it's about - the 'backing track' bit. I hope you don't think this has been some kind of back-door way of saying that you were wrong in saying the show was a dud. It was. It was the worst show, by a mile, we've played in about nine months. No question. I'd review the vomit I left in the band-room toilets afterwards more highly. But at least we can only hold ourselves, rather than a backing track responsible. This is a good thing, because it means change.

Hat politely tilted in the direction of the vomit reference. Well played, sir.

Josh's email was pleasant and I completely understand where he is coming from. He told me that he feels passionately about NOT using backing tracks in their performance even though it would be the easier option and that was the sole reason he felt compelled to email us when we saw the comment.

Thanks for setting us straight Josh.
