Super8 Diaries Sydney launch

Super8 Diaries is a self-funded, no budget video project created by Matt Richards and Jeremy Rouse from Trainwreck 20/20. The documentary covers the local DIY music scene over the past four years, providing a great snapshot of a variety of bands that have made an impact in recent times. Consisting of a mix of live performances - all shot on lovely super8 film - and interviews with the bands, it's a fantastically very executed insight into a side of Australian music that is so rarely documented.

In January of this year, after four years in the making, the documentary was released onto DVD. It came bundled with a great accompanying glossy booklet containing info on all of the eleven bands that were handpicked to feature in the doco. The bands included were My Disco, Die! Die! Die!, The Tigers, Love Of Diagrams, Tucker B's, Bang!Bang!AIDS!, Baseball, Eddy Current Supression Ring, Colditz Glider, Aleks and the Ramps and Mukaizake.

The style of the video perfectly matches the attitude of the performances. The black and white imagery, shaky handheld shots and hit-and-miss audio successfully carries out the tough job of capturing the spirit of the local DIY scene, void of any sugar-coating or polishing.

You can order the DVD via the Trainwreck 20/20 website or you can pick up a copy at the upcoming Sydney launch. The launch will take place on Sunday, June 8 from 2pm to midnight at Dirty Shirlows (32 Shirlow St, Marrickville). Bands will be playing all afternoon, with a special screening of the documentary happening at around 7.30pm.

The bands performing on the day:

  • Tucker B's
  • Charge Group
  • Ohana
  • When Chimps Attack
  • Castings
  • Lola Flash
  • Do Not Rescusitate
  • Qua

Now, all of that same info in 'image format'...

If the launch show is even one-tenth as awesome as the documentary then we are surely in for a highly enjoyable day.

My Disco have taken out the music category at this year's Spirit Of Youth Awards (aka the SOYAs). The Melbourne trio take home $5,000 in cold hard ca$h and $5,000 worth of Qantas flights. They also get the opportunity to be 'mentored' for the next 12 months by wunder-producer Scott Horscroft, who has previously worked with Silverchair and The Panics. Hmm.. maybe a little bit of a mismatch there. #
