Gig Review: Walrus + Cuthbert and the Night Walkers @ Spectrum - 31st Jan 2007

About 2 years ago I saw Walrus for the first time. Since then, they have probably been one of the local bands I have seen the most. They have come a long way as well. From an impressive band with potential, to a tight, cohesive ROCK unit with more accesible songs, and a stronger live presence.

Walrus

They tore through their set, not even distracted by the dickhead (apologies if he was actually a friend of the band) who was waving EP's in the air like he didn't care and distracting patrons from the actual show that was going on. They were confronting and relentless, hardly giving the semi-packed house (well, good for a Wednesday) enough to sip their drinks and/or adjust their headwear.

In short, they play honest blues rock music, and entertain on a live front more than many other local bands.

Walrus

The show climaxing on the frequently radio played track War! which, if anyone in the crowd needed final convincing that this band meant business, then that was it.

Which also involved a little bit of lead-singer-jumping-into-drums action (which is always a little bit nice)..

Walrus

Earlier in the evening, another band on the rise, Cuthbert and the Night Walkers did more than a little bit to warm up the crowd. They had an asset as well that very few Australian bands seem to possess - a little bit of originality. They aren't just another rock band, or rip-off of a tired and over-done concept. What are they like? Well, for starters, the stage is full, half with young ladies as back-up singers..

Cuthbert and the Night Walkers

Overall, both bands proved as enough evidence that the Sydney music scene is more than just a few hipster bands with too much hype, even if you have to drudge out on a Wednesday night to find this out.
