Quirky is probably a good word to describe Deerhoof. Strange, weird, alternative, experimental all fit the bill too. But over and above anything else, fun is the prevailing theme of everything they have ever released. You can endlessly argue and discuss all the fantastic, revolutionary techniques that they've used to make their songs sound like nothing else. When it comes down to it however, it simply sounds like three people having the time of their lives making music.
Friend Opportunity is another great example of this. There's the floating in the clouds fantasy moments, there's the sludgy prog moments, there's the happy and sad moments, but each moment always brings a bouncy joyous undertone making all of the album enjoyable to some degree. There's times when songs about dog's and men and throwing sticks gets a little too much, but it's forgivable in the knowledge that if the band didn't allow themselves to get so ridiculous that the rest of the album would suffer.
The Perfect Me, +81 and Believe E.S.P start the album off in a fury and Matchbook Seeks Maniac brings it all back together at the end after some of the more avant-garde moments of the record. The album almost always maintains its momentum and mood however, making an enjoyable experience which only takes a little bit of getting acccustomed to.
