Thats right! Our Everyone's favourite Sydney upstarts have taken out the NSW heat of the MTV Kickstart competition, which was held in Sydney on 14th March. They now go up against some other great Australian (and an NZ) bands (of which not all have been decided yet) in an online vote, the winner being handed a cheque for $20,000 to use on furthering their budding, potential filled careers as the rock lords of Australia!
I spoke with Dan (Bass/Vocals) of Walrus today and he described how it all went down:
'I don't know how it happened, but somehow we managed to win the comp last night, which means we have a shot at $20,000 big ones and a whole lot of corporate selling-outness. Good times. The event was sponsored by insert name of fancy shampoo here and the place was decked out like a marketer's wet dream - MTV posters everywhere, post-urban set design, skeletons and scantily clad women in stillettos plastered all over the walls, dismembered mannequin legs on the stage...
It was weird, but we won! We really have to improve our PR skills though - we did some appalling Spinal Tap-esque interviews for the camera (before and after the show, the second one noticeably more inebriated) and when we were announced as the winner Roland (Guitars/Vocals) was downstairs at Burger King, so Joel (Guitars) did his best attempt at a stand-up comedy acceptance speech while Mark (Drums) and I stood either side of stage looking awkward. Did I mention the good times? Whole thing was like a surreal train-wreck. We played really well though, and the crowd was loving it, so I guess that's why we won.'
Surreal trainwreck or not, i dont think anyone could deny what that sort of money could do for a struggling band trying to make it. And i can personally vouch for the fact that no one deserves it more than Walrus do.
So that's where you come in... Head to The MTV Kickstart website and vote as many times as is legally allowed to for Walrus, both early AND often. They have told me they will buy each and everyone a beer and a lamb kebab if you do so, so get to it!
