Dates for Laneway Festival 2009 announced

One of the juiciest (and tastiest) festivals offered in the confines of Oz-tralia, Laneway Festival, has announced that it will be back in 'da OH nine' for another romp around the country.

Unfortunately despite our endless emails (spamming?) and our most persuasive 'aaahhhhhh come on' whinges the organisers won't even offer us tiny baby-sized hints on who will be playing at next year's festival.

They did, however, offer up some dates AND also a list of days when the festival will be happening (zing?):

Saturday, January 31: Brisbane
Sunday, February 1: Melbourne
Friday, February 6: Perth
Saturday, February 7: Adelaide
Sunday, February 8: Sydney

The festival has been moved forward about a month from the previous couple of years. We could maybe expect some sort of cross over between this and the line-up for the Big Day Out? Yes? Maybe?

The first line-up announcement is scheduled for sometime around mid-October.

line-up tomo/?

Posted at 16:29 on Wednesday, September 17, 2008.

Aaaaron

I don't really care what the line up is, I had so much fun this year. Dan Deacon's dance off (where I tore up) was a highlight.
That and listening to Ginzzzzz shred up at the after party. Oh wait, thats right, I didn't get let in to that.

Posted at 16:38 on Wednesday, September 17, 2008.

tomosushi

i heard they're going all ATP on us and getting POA to curate it...

still waiting for final submission Jonny (or didn't you get the memo) but rumour has it it will look something like this:

Talons
Siamese Ginzz DJ Set
Talons Acoustic Set
Boozy Sweats
Talons DJ Set
Dead China Doll
Talons
Casstrator

Afterparty: Kissing With Fingers DJs vs Siamese Ginzz Hip Hop Extravaganza.

yay or nay?

Posted at 17:42 on Wednesday, September 17, 2008.

Jonny Yes Yes

you missed one Talons
and an ODB dedicated set from Volcano Rats Of Woman

yeh.. so i assume we are once more 'ruckus bringing' for the afterparty? are da fingers challenging?

gemdilem

woop to the woot (copyright, first boozy sweats album title)

kissing with fingers are up to the challenge... keep in mind though there has recently been a bit of a split amongst KWF members due to some musical differences... I believe casstrator is the result.... kissing with fingers now consists of me and tomo and maybe carley with merch and jackie doing robert palmer dancing...

are we doing the double? syd and melb?

can we start guessing the lineup? and tomo can tell us if we are hot or cold... it'll be a fun game to keep us amused during september

From Last FM...so who knows....

Wolf Parade, The Books, Joshua Radin, Los Campesinos!, Bon Iver, Dan Deacon, Muscles, New Buffalo, High Places, El Guincho, Grafton Primary, Qua, My Disco, Songs and Aleks and the Ramps

Posted at 20:35 on Saturday, October 11, 2008.

flukazoid

holy cow... that line-up achieved an 8 out of 14 "yes, definitely" score for me.

most excellent!

Posted at 18:53 on Sunday, October 12, 2008.

Sean

apparently Brag has a full page ad with the following lineup:

Girl Talk
Architecture In Helsinki
Stereolab
The Drones
The Hold Steady
Cut Off Your Hands
Tame Imapala
Four Tet
El Guincho
Buraka Som Sistema
DJ/MC Set Jay Reatard
The Temper Trap
No Age
The John Steel Singers
Canyons
Pivot
Port O'Brien
Holly Throsby
Born Ruffians
Mountains In The Sky
Fite Still Flyin Deadelus
Spiral Stairs

NO WOLF PARADE

Posted at 00:07 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

quack

....and laneway continues its movement towards bland indie...or 'blindie'.

That said I'll go as there is a fair bit there to see. Wonder if Reatard will play sideshows, couldn't make it when he toured at the start of the year.

Posted at 01:06 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

flukazoid

wow...
well...
that's quite different to the other lineup!

but still not shabby by any stretch, in my humble opinion.

it scores 11/22 judging from my "must see" evaluation criteria... is 50% enough?

Posted at 01:20 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Sean

Easily. There's probably only a couple acts there I really love...tempted to avoid it and just go to a couple sideshows.

But I wouldn't mind checking out a few others...so I might have a nice relaxed, see whatever kind of festival.

(Can I admit here that I don't mind the Holly Throsby record?)

Posted at 01:31 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Jonny Yes Yes

HA... no you can't Sean. booted..
i think that looks like a very believable line-up..
it's sad if wolf parade won't be there.. excited over No Age though
i hope they don't get Girl Talk to headline the big stage as the closer.. laptop music ..? prob won't work.

Posted at 07:50 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

gemdilem

yeah I agree.. Girl Talk on the big stage probably won't work.. but the kids love Girl Talk so I think the smaller stages will be too small...

this is a completely different line up... not very indie really... I'm very surprised... I like it, just wasn't expecting it...

what I'm really scared about is how hot (and smelly) its going to be in Basement... last year it stunk in there with all the sweaty bodies... next year its earlier, hotter...

Posted at 10:19 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Jonny Yes Yes

i sweatier the better i say

Posted at 10:53 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Wayne

Not as good as 2008, but still a very good lineup.
For me, The Hold Steady, No Age and Born Ruffians are must sees.

Obviously the Wolf Parade would have made it much better.
Let's hope they can still find their way here.

Posted at 11:23 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Aaaaron

Girl Talk will probably play that stage down the back where The Presets closed this year. No Age is going to be sex.

Posted at 11:33 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Sean

When I saw Four Tet six years ago it was a laptop show. Anyone know if he still performs that way?

Posted at 12:14 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Jonny Yes Yes

yeh.. i saw him about 3 years ago as part of the sydney festival and it was the same thing..
with a powerpoint presentation slideshow backdrop..
was definitely missing something..

Posted at 12:27 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Sean

also, is it just me or does this lineup kind of lack a "headliner"?

Posted at 12:28 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

tomosushi

all acts are contracted to play laptop show...
do you people not watch the news? are you not aware of the state of the economy?
need to save the mega cash dollarzz on freight & production...obvs
most of the o/s acts will have their set televised to the festivals cause they don't have the $$$ to fly over...

Posted at 12:31 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Wayne

Sean, I think it lacks an obvious "headliner" too.
But for me The Hold Steady should close.
If you haven't been converted yet, I am
sure a live performance will do the trick.

Posted at 12:49 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

flukazoid

I saw Four Tet at Hyde Park Barracks and I thought he was really, really awesome. Now, this being said I dragged four friends with me and they thought he was CRAP, so there you go.

I would have thought Stereolab were the headliner. They have a huge history behind them, a lot of respect and a massive amount of influence. Or is it just me?

Posted at 12:55 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Sean

Wayne: I saw the Hold Steady at Laneway a few years ago...they did NOTHING for me. I left after about four songs. I've tried several times to get into that band and it just ain't happening.

Yeah, Stereolab should be headlining I think...kind of like Yo La Tengo did a couple years ago. Hugely influential band (although I barely know them).

If there are no other major acts announced I think Girl Talk will headlining the big stage with Sterolab on before them. And AIH will headline the Lane stage with Drones on before them. Just guessin.

Posted at 13:03 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Sean

Lineup complete with Seanottations to see if I should buy a ticket.

Girl Talk - will be fun times I suppose
Architecture In Helsinki - used to love this band...something happened.
Stereolab - legends, so i'd definitely check them out even if I'm pretty unfamiliar with their work
The Drones - love them but can see them relatively regularly
The Hold Steady - don't do a thing for me
Cut Off Your Hands - have gradually become less and less interesting
Tame Imapala - who?
Four Tet - love his records but live....not so much
El Guincho - not my thing
Buraka Som Sistema - who?
Jay Reatard - intriguing I suppose
The Temper Trap - nope
No Age - probably the only act I'm really excited to see
The John Steel Singers - meh
Canyons - unfamiliar with them
Pivot - meh
Port O'Brien - the record is still sitting in a pile waiting to be listened to
Holly Throsby - like her record actually, would check her out
Born Ruffians - didn't like the record at all
Mountains In The Sky - meh
Still Flyin - heard they were good last time
Spiral Stairs - what's his solo show like??
Tim Fite - who?
Daedelus - who?

Posted at 13:09 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

flukazoid

Fine, Sean. Anything you can do I can do too!

Girl Talk - frankly, I think the album isn't quite as awesome as the buzz suggests, but I still hear reports that his shows are MENTAL and so I'm keen to see him
Architecture In Helsinki - neither here nor there for me. I would probably see them, but not rush to.
Stereolab - HELLS YEAH STEREOLAB PEOPLE
The Drones - after my recent introduction, I am super keen to see these guys. as good a chance as any
The Hold Steady - don't like them
Cut Off Your Hands - ditto
Tame Imapala - y'know, I liked them before Yeasayer. I wouldn't mind seeing a full set
Four Tet - I really like Kieran Hebden
El Guincho - I hear MASSIVE amounts of raves about their show, so I am quite keen to check this out
Buraka Som Sistema - ditto with Sean - who?
DJ/MC Set Jay Reatard - not kinda all that interested, unless Jonny can make me see the light
The Temper Trap - not on my radar
No Age - very keen to see how these guys come across live
The John Steel Singers - not me
Canyons - also don't know them
Pivot - see, this is one of the most unpredictably patchy bands I've seen live on a number of occasions. but when they're on, they're ON. so for that reason I would see them.
Port O'Brien - no idea
Holly Throsby - might have a quiet drink to her set. it'll be in the basement, surely?
Born Ruffians - I hated this record, but then I threw it away after one listen so maybe I should have tried more listens.
Mountains In The Sky - I don't mind these guys, I think they're pretty decent
Tim Fite - no idea
Still Flyin - I heard some samples (they played laneway last year) and they sounded ok - but I ended up not wanting to brave the craptastic laneway by the time they were on
Deadelus - apparently epic, from what I hear
Spiral Stairs - no idea

I saw Still Flyin' last year and they were good... I even wrote about them in my blog back in March:
Completely by chance I caught Still Flyin' and so glad I did. I had no idea who they were but thought I'd give them a look in, because that's the best part of Laneway - hearing new bands. They play music that is up beat and strangely addictive. They are cult meets happy clappy church, about 25 people are in their group (I have no idea how they all fitted on the stage), indie meets reggae in a jam session. Anyway, they completely elevated my mood, put a smile on my face and made me want to dance. Great times. Also because of the sheer number of people in the band there were quite a few people who simply danced on stage and occassionally played the tamborine. As a result I now believe that my dream to be in a band will one day come true. Even I can dance on stage and play the tamborine!

Seymour

Oh, No Age at a warehouse in Marrickville would be awesome!

Posted at 14:19 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

gemdilem

I'm kinda keen to see what The Temper Trap are up to... seen Architecture in Helsinki a few times now but still would be keen to see them again.. are they making new music yet?
Definitely keen to see Girl Talk and Stereolab... No Age would be great to see... along with a few of the others like The Drones, The Hold Steady, Cut Off Your Hands... maybe not must sees but I'm sure they'll put on a good show... I'm sure my opinions will change by Feb though

I think Still Flyin had a bit to do with the after party rucus.. along with the Canadians of course...

Posted at 14:22 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

Wayne

My go, might as well...

Girl Talk - Music means absolutely nothing to me; heard the live show is awesome, but I honestly think I would be bored
Architecture In Helsinki - Last album was terrible, so not sure if I need to see them again
Stereolab - Not my cup of tea, huge respect I ackowledge, so would be curious on that factor
The Drones - Just not into them, but would like to try them live
The Hold Steady - Seriously, could be the best band to play in Australia in 2009, awesome live reputation, great lyrics,
tunes you can dance too- I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cut Off Your Hands - Don't like them
Tame Imapala - Don't know enough about them, am curious
Four Tet - I like Four Tet, not sure how he goes down live, would like to see him
El Guincho - Meh
Buraka Som Sistema - ditto again - who?
DJ/MC Set Jay Reatard - no
The Temper Trap - not really
No Age - Excited to see them
The John Steel Singers - maybe
Canyons - also don't know them
Pivot - Like to see them again
Port O'Brien - Have all their stuff, love it, love to see them (my sort of music)
Holly Throsby - meh
Born Ruffians - I love them, one of my favourite albums of 2008. Saw them in Canada
and thought they were great
Mountains In The Sky - Curious
Tim Fite - No idea
Still Flyin - Apparently were great last year, so very curious
Deadelus - No idea
Spiral Stairs - is a a legend. PAVEMENT. Not sure what he would be play, but he is
a legend. Played with BSS at first Laneway.

Posted at 14:51 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

quack

Maybe I was too pessimistic, it was more the headliners - Girl Talk, AIH and Hold Steady (I presume) that bored me. Massively keen to see Reatard and No Age. Haven't listened to the most recent Cut off your hands album, but they were pretty good at the 2nd laneway (1st in brisbane) just after their original 'shaky hands' ep came out. The other ep, blue on blue, didn't interest me so much.

Hope the 2nd announcement has a couple of more exciting bands. It just looks a little bland to me, especially after last years BSS-fest which frankly bored the shit out of me. The day was only saved by Devastations.

Posted at 15:57 on Monday, October 13, 2008.

flukazoid

whoa. I took the liberty of taking a listen of the Daedelus album and it is AMAZING

I officially can not wait to see this man.

Seriously, I might be having an attack of early-listen-hype but even if he turns out to be half as good as I think he is he will still be awesome
