There is a strong chance that if you turn up early to see a show featuring a big-time international band/artist in Jamuary and/or Fuguary then you'll be greeted by the punishingly enjoyable sounds of
garage boat shed punks
Royal Headache.
As the title suggests, I am getting 'hitched' this weekend. This means that a) I probably won't be going out to see any bands play (besides the Mexican cover band we have booked) and; b) next week it will probably be a little bit quiet around here as me and the soon-to-be Mrs Jonny will be sunning ourselves on a beeeetch somewhere, sipping dangerous cocktails and enjoying the tranquility of married life.
So I guess I went into this way more tired than I was expecting, having spent the morning doing my final university exam for the year. Which is a shame as I was really looking forward to this gig.
Over the past few weeks, while enduring raving on my behalf about the brilliance of this record, those around me that are unfamiliar with the band have questioned what The Stabs actually sound like. As often is the case with music I particularly like, I have struggled to encapsulate my feelings, instead responding by mumbling words like 'punk' and 'noisy'. Now, with the the luxury of not being on the spot, I have had the time to come with a slightly more suitable summary of their music.
Sydney pop-punks
Royal Headache are looking for some people to drive them down to Melbourne this weekend. More info in
this thread.
In related news, Royal Headache will NOT be supporting You Am I at their matinee show
this Sunday as previously reported by the
Annandale Hotel website and re-published in our gig guide. Thanks to Nic from
RIP Society for the heads up.
This fantastic swaggering bucket of noise is from the
Melbourne trio's new record
Dead Wood.
The first batch of artists for the
2010 Golden Plains festival was announced this morning. Obviously, Pavement's headline slot was
already known, but there are still plenty of lovely inclusions in the first round.
Chitty Chat, the latest single from experimental Sydney posse
Naked On The Vague, is 49% pleasantly intense 'ear grinding', 50% blissfully catchy pop and 1% stripped back DIY love.
As with
The UV Race's previous efforts, this song is a short, sloppy affair. It sounds a little bit like a straight-up garage punk tune which has spent a large chunk of the afternoon smacking down bucket/wombat bongs. There may or not be a dirty backyard kiddy pool incorporated somehow as well.
Ordinarily we save our 'what is happening in Sydney' posts for the final two days of the working week, when the soulless 9-5 has beaten you to a pulp and there is nothing left to look forward to other than putting your feet up and/or getting completely dank-faced at an underground rave party. But this week is special.
