Is there a lot of champagne being popped over at Rice Is Nice HQ tonight?

Well, actually (from what I hear) most Wednesdays they crack open some French bubbly because that's just the way the party broz/hoez roll. However, today 'Da Riceys' actually have something worthy of the extravagant celebrating ritual with TWO of their artists - Talons and Seekae - making it onto the SOYA 2009 shortlist.

Sydney has had a steady flow of impressive noisy punk bands emerge over the past few years. Talons, Whores and Dead Farmers, to name but a few, have molded their angsty outbursts of frustration into exciting and genuinely catchy punk music. Songs exist at the other end of the spectrum, and while still classifiable under the wide umbrella of 'punk music', they don't possess quite the same dangerous swagger as their peers, choosing instead to mix together sensible pop structures with melodic arrangements to create a less aggressive form of the genre.

Die! Die! Die!, DZ, The Mint Chicks, Tucker B's - Wedding Messages For Jonny

As some of you would already know, I got married about a month ago. Chief Editor and head of our Euro Department Mike Punch was the best man and, in an attempt to foil our strict 'no presents' policy, he organised a bunch of my favourite musicians to record special little wedding messages. The results are fairly spine-tinglingly lovely.
