i think they normally have it written into the artist's contracts that they can't announce their own shows until the festival sells out..

worst line up of any festival ever.

Not the best line up but there are some alright acts in this first annoucement, namely The Horrors, Girl Talk & The Mars Volta, even thought I wouldn't want to see either of those bands in an outdoor setting. But it has to be expected that three of the most popular & mainstream Aussie bands will be close to the top of the bill of Australia's biggest music festival.
I'm sure The Temper Trap will get some young girls excited. So, if you're a young guy you might be able to get your fingers wet up in the grand stand after they're done.

Seeing 'three of the most popular Australian bands' in the first 5 on the line-up doesn't make me feel any sense of national pride, it makes me despair for our local industry because it just brings home what Australians want to spend their money on. Wow, music nerds never cease to amaze me. I though gamers whinged, I thought movie fans whinged, but you guys take the cake. A rare few of you have managed to keep your complaints on a personal level (which is fine with me, if you don't like particular bands then you don't like them, personally i don't like blink and would've been dissapointed with them or ACDC as the headliners) but most of you seem to be arrogant enough to assume you speak for everyone. This is a commercial festival, complaining that commercial bands are playing is pointless and also kinda ridiculous....if you want something other than what BDO has to offer, then perhaps you should be looking for a different festival. The festival organisers are clearly doing something right and are unlikely to change tactics as the tickets sold out in minutes.

Remember folks opinion and fact are very often two different things...if everyone remembered that the world would be a better place wouldn't it...maybe the holocaust wouldn't have happened (haha had to get that in for monachilada).

No that is not what i said. I didn't defend commercialism, i stated facts about what BDO is and why it works for the organisers. Those that are looking for alternative, imaginative music are looking in the wrong place....simple eh?

And this is basically the heart of it. There have been some relatively choice lineups in years gone by, but when it comes down to it, BDO is ostensibly the highest profile music festival we have in Australia. There's nothing niche or demographically specific - the organisers are more than winning if they manage to get some that pleases the widest range of people. And apparently a lineup as pedestrian as this is what the widest range of people want.

BDO haven't wronged us, they just haven't catered to "us" (whoever "us" is) particularly well this year. And frankly speaking, looking at the comparative size of a festival that has a better rep on these boards like - say - the Laneway Festival, it would seem that the BDO organizers aren't particularly threatened by this activity.

The BDO is in the same category as ARIAs, MTV, VH-1, Nova in what it brings to music. Similar target demographic, similar commercial aspirations. Doesn't mean it's good, but if it's not, let's stop giving them attention and focus on where the good stuff's happening.

I've been to a few BDOs. Back in the day (ok maybe 10 years ago), for me, the festival was about bringing big name bands that had never been to Australia before. I would be excited about seeing these once in a lifetime bands. I'm struggling to get excited about the 2010 line up. It looks like a mashup of all the previous years line ups. How many of these bands have played the BDO before? A few I'm sure.

Maybe I'm just getting old.

Most disappointing BDO line up ever. I have missed some years because the bands didn't tickle my fancy but have still been impressed by the quality of acts going. This line up is like a supporting cast with no lead. It appears this is the first year where ticket sales have come before quality, this year is definately pitched to a younger generation. I love Muse, but I am a little over them (overexposure tends to kill everything I love), love the Mars Volta, but it's the old case of been there done that I think. You used to always be able to rely on the BDO for massive acts that wouldn't normally bother with our country. Muse as headliners was simply too easy and a little lazy.

Where were any one of these acts before the indie crowd caught on and spread the word. I bought my first Muse Album in 1999 (That's right, they have been around for over ten years now) and I think this line up is average. Not because I am an Indie alternative dickhead, but because it is.
