Mere Women
Waves

Speaking of the (unmissable) Intentions launch TONIGHT, make sure you get down early-ish to catch Mere Women.

The female-male-female Marrickville trio, who have been involved with several other legendary Sydney bands, including Ohana and The Thaw, have a unique dark, minimal, poppy-post-punk style - the ideal soundtrack for spastic white-boy dance moves at hip warehouse parties, as well as post-party comedown, alleyway suicide pacts.

Waves, from the group's forthcoming 12" single, sums up their style perfectly. For every tickle of virgin innocence, there's a commanding dictator fisting. For every consistent reliable rhythmic thud, there's some directionless spastic guitar sheet that grabs you by the hair, drags you into A Rave Cave and pleasantly "does the business".

The 12" single is getting pressed as we speak/read/type. Launch shows are expected to happen sometime on the other side of the 2010/2011 border.

Side notes...

The photo above is by an amazingly talented Sydney fella called Lucien Alperstein. Check out loads more of his work here and here.

If you get a chance, I highly recommend you get your ears onto The Thaw's Bruce Lee EP. The record, which is really just one 16-minute track, still ranks as one of my favourite local releases from the beautiful mid-00s period of Sydney DIY music. I'm pretty sure Tenzenmen used to sell it, but it's currently not listed on his site. Maybe shoot him an email or something and see if he's just got some spares lying around.

Fortunately, the EP is also available as a free download on Zaptunes (but you still should grab a physical copy if you can.. obvs).
