Spider Vomit
Widows Walk

Throughout Spider Vomit's debut EP you can't help but feel dirty. Not sexy dirty - just plain dirty. The five rhythmic heavy tracks live in a swamp filled wasteland, where regular songs are taken, beaten and dragged through a filthy pit of human remains. It sounds something like the hymns of a renegade mud gang on acid. The distant shouted vocals play second fiddle to the pounding drums and strong bass lines - often sounding as though they have been yelled from another room of the squatter's paradise that it this EP sounds as though it was recorded in.

The first two tracks, Tail Points To Hell and No Way, are executed perfectly and the clear highlights of the release. No Way has a catchy hook and the rival shouting match that is played out as the backbone of the song pounds away in the head for days. Problems, although a little cring-worthy with the call and response breakdown, highlights the fact that the band have primarily geared their music towards live performance and, as with much of the release, seems as though it would feel a lot more comfortable in a sweaty over-crowded warehouse party than on compact disc.

The title track which, although powered by the conitinual change in tempo, kicks on for about two minutes too long. That said - the explosive end to the track, a sudden jolt of energy and chaos, is fucking brilliant. The EP ends with Evil Bloody Long Haired Woman, a more guitar based track, that paints an image of a cult-like ritualistic ceremony. The two seperate vocal arrangements, essentially taking two different paths yet arriving at the same final location sounds fantastic. Once again the track kicks into a chaotic finale where everyone implodes from the raw intensity of what sounds like the music equivalent of sacrificing a goat.

Although Widows Walk is slightly repetitive in the ideas that it presents it does showcase a remarkably talented and, more importantly, unique group. The music often borders on the point of losing the listener as it gets engrossed in it's own experimentation, but for the most part it is a filthy, enjoyable journey into another world.

I prefer Pig Vomit, ala Howard Stern's nemesis.
