On The Fritz packages together tracks from three previosly released EP's - Fink, Clap Clap Clap and Zounds, each one recorded two months apart since the band's birth in February of this year. The album showcases the wild, relentless and unforgiving nature of this band that clearly has no champagne expectations of becoming media puppet rock stars. This is believable fuck-off rock music, born in warehouse rehearsal spaces, perfected in sweaty pubs and recorded in single takes in an attempt to capture their engaging live presence.
While for the most part The Ripping Dylans sound like a full speed, uncontrolled steam train, there is definately a depth to their style. Folk Self Annihilation groans and falls apart in beautiful Nick Cave-like fashion, Kids is a catchy blues inspired number, Bad Blood is a hard-hitting punk number, while Moth, Nocturne, Pollock and our favourite Elephant Ink are fantastic windmills of garage rock punches. All of which highlight the band's ability to build tangents on top of their base sound to keep the listener's ears aroused.
Besides the occasional weaker moment when things slow down and become slightly awkward - such as the acoustic number So Am I Loved - this album is a fulfilling adventure of music delivered with force and determination. The under-produced nature in which it has been packaged perfectly compliments the swagger and aggression of the Sydney trio. If you haven't already received a firm uppercut to the crotch region by the explosive guitar-based fury of this band then it's only a matter of time. Watch out for it - it will be a great feeling.
