Feist
The Reminder

As with most things Canadian, Feist's music is confident, yet lacks the arrogance of an American. However, Feist's recently released album The Reminder is just that; a reminder of her vast talents, without replicating them in full.

While the pop brilliance displayed on this album is impressive, the feeling that it could offer so much more is always lingering. The amount of pure glee moments are too often overshadowed by moments of almost deafening silence, as Feist whispers, lilts and moans her way through three quarters of the album, leaving the most engaging material in her wake within the first few songs.

I'm happy for artists to indulge in their artistry, and by no means is the slower, quieter material on The Reminder inferior, contrived or self-indulgent. I just can't help but feel that the purely great pop gems on this track are wasted on a record mainly about something other than pop.

If Feist's output was more prolific to the levels of a Beck or Ryan Adam's, a quiet album followed quickly by a pop record with tracks of the caliber of 'My Moon My Man' and the brilliant 'I Feel It All' would be much easier to swallow for fans such as myself. However with her slower development process the taunting and teasing that is snippets of perfection, intertwined with quality music of the wrong ilk is simply intolerable cruelty.

Yeah, I'm greedy.
