Future Of The Left
Curses

Fans of veteran Welsh outfit McLusky were pleased when they heard about Future Of The Left, as the band is made up of several former members of the popular group. Listening to the album it's fair to say that 'Curses' begins around the same spot that the aforementioned band left off. The trademark sludge is still there, and so are the "wacky and irreverent" lyrics that McLusky where so well known for.

After the ancestry housekeeping is out of the way, all that is left is whether the album is any good. There are moments on 'Curses' where one can't help bopping their head or tapping their foot to the infectious and powerful noises that unashamedly tip their hat to the grungey riff's that people of my age spent a good deal of the 90's listening and feeling disenfranchised to.

But it is the previously mentioned colorful "lyrics" of the album that let it down. For most of the time they are better described, generously I might add, as complete bullshit. While Nirvana were aptly singing about 'teen spirit' (even if it was about deodarant), Future of the Left sing about 'sausage on a stick' and how much Colin is a 'very pretty pussy'.

The sheer ridiculousness and utter lack of substance to the lyrics are so prevalent that it's easy to make an argument for a completely instrumental album. The fact that they are so amateur cheapens the rest of the otherwise solid album, and are so cringe worthy that it becomes enough of a distraction to discourage repeat listens of the album.
