Holy Fuck
LP

This lo-fi experimental act, surely named after the initial reaction 92% of people have when they hear their music, create some of the most interesting and engaging electronic music that has graced my ears in some time. They differ from the usual 'button pushers' as Holy Fuck's music is created completely without the modern tools such as laptops and pre-programmed loops. All of their music is created with a large array of 'real' instruments including drums, toy keyboards and other items that range from traditional tools to household objects.

On the spectrum of sound they exist somewhere between !!! (Chk Chk Chk) and Battles. Mix in a punk rock attitude and a little touch of quirky fun and you have somewhat arrived at the place at which this band exists.

LP opens with a 'live' track which sets the unformulated approach this album takes. Every moment of the 37-minute long adventure is unpredictable. All nine songs have a definite melody yet are presented to us as living and breathing beasts with the capability to dive off into a completely different direction at the drop of a high hat, cymbal or strange piano sound.

Throughout all the chaos and casio-driven rock this album throws at the listener it surprisingly all gels together very well. The album dips into several little sub genres on it's journey yet the transitions between each doesn't throw the album off course. Tracks like The Pulse, Frenchy's and Royal Gregory are instantly catchy danceable numbers. The rising atmosphere and theatrical style of Lovely Allen conjures up images of a triumphant closing scene of a futuristic war movie. While the more obscure tracks like Echo Sam and Choppers create their own rhythm out of background noise and layers upon layers of dueling instruments.

This album is a frantic, sample-free electronic masterpiece. It is a completely unique body of work, creatively wild and exciting. This is a clear step forward for - not only the generally stale genre which it is part of - but also music itself. This is what the future sounds like. Embrace it or get fucked.

yeah.. loving this. Thanks for the heads up

is it completely sample-free? I could have sworn that was a Gary Numan sample on "Frenchy's"

Has anyone heard of a band called "Contrived" - apparently consisting of Holy Fuck member(s) and fellow Canadians, Wintersleep.

Though not as exciting as Holy Fuck they are still worth checking out: http://www.myspace.com/contrived

I saw them in Canada last year (skite, skite) and they
were very good. Would not have minded going tonight, but
need to go on a Christmas shopping expedition.

Have fun!
