Liam Finn's debut solo album I'll Be Lightning reminds the world that there's more to New Zealand than just rugby and sheep. Written, recorded, produced and mixed by this impressive 23 year old, the noise surrounding Finn's live performances will surely grow louder as word of this release spreads.
Everything from the eco-friendly packaging to the addictive nature of the songs make this album truly unforgettable. All 14 tracks are worthy of praise. There is the charismatic first single Second Chance, which is already up for awards in Finn's homeland of New Zealand; the uplifting Lead Balloon adds some raw rock flavour to the album with a Jimmy-Barnes-esque finish; the poetic Gather To The Chapel and the seductive Music Moves My Feet are also noteworthy tracks.
The pick of the bunch however is Wise Man which perfectly demonstrates Finn's songwriting ability in a powerful acoustic display. Although Finn played most of the instruments in the recording of this album, he still managed to find room for his father Neil (of Crowded House and Split Enz fame) to play bass on the title track I'll Be Lightning which is a somewhat haunting and moving piece of music.
Although this winter release seems more suited to summer holidays in the sun, it has more than help improve my mood on many a dreary day of late.
